Help advice needed

i recently had my car keys stolen after a burglary I claimed though my insurance ers for replacement locks and transponders etc this all started on the 12th of sept 2017 the car was trailered away lost for 3 days eventually it was found taken to garage to do locks I got a call on the 29th of sept saying locks changed but cant start the car . They then said car would have to go to range rover main dealers to sort out problem the battery was new around 3 months ago so not that . the main dealers where supposed to take car on the 16th of this month to sort but I got a call this morning that cant be seen until the 8 November by range rover dealers . Have complained to Lloyds about insurance company mistakes but process takes serious times and is ongoing . If the battery wasn't disconnected properly as per instructions any ideas if this would cause not starting ? I have a feeling that the garage have truly Censored up the vechile any thoughts on this are very welcomed cheers

I'm no expert but suspect that a system reset is required following the battery removal, if the battery is completely flat/disconnected it will prevent starting, even if the battery has been recharged/replaced with a sound one. When my 2004 car battery failed the (non-LR Assist) recovery technician was advised by LRA to short the battery connectors together (this was in a remote field so no chance of using diagnostic machine etc). If you can get confirmation from a LR dealer or LR Assist or someone on here who knows more than me that this is the thing to do it might solve the problem.

Good luck. Only Range Rovers since 1988

No battery reset is required on a 2004 if you either disconnect the battery or indeed replace it.
Regarding not starting, I know it may be obvious but has anyone actually checked the new keys have transponders fitted in them? You have to start somewhere. Thumbs Up

Why were the locks changed, were they damaged?
You can get keys cut without having an original but better just to order a new key from Landrover that will fit and should work out the box for your year . It not Guy Salmon in Maidstone just sorted my 2006 in an hour when the only key to my 2006 was lost. The later vehicles won't let you program a key without an original without dealer reprogramming.
Do you know if the key turns but won't start or won't turn at all?

Tbh I'm really not sure why the locks where changed it s just been left to insurance company and they where done by there instructions wouldn't just getting keys redone mean the car could be stolen with the old key that was taken in burglary ?

Potentially yes, however the keys are individually paired to the EWS3D immobiliser, info below from Black Box Solutions, so the stolen keys can be turned off and the new keys turned on but that wouldn't stop them getting into the door and think it would probably still turn off the alarm.

They wouldn't be able to turn the key in the ignition as the transponder wouldn't match so they couldn't pair the old key again easily i wouldn't think but if they are prepared to go those lengths then kit is available to cut a key even without an existing one and then remove the immobiliser and pair it using software and a laptop.

So you are right, probably a good idea to change the locks.

• Currently inserted key: This is the key which is currently in the ignition. Inserted key identity starts from 1 and ends at 10, but the keys are recognised in the ECU as being programmed into key slots 0 to 9.
• Key Slot Status 0-9: Key memory slots 0 to 9 shows if the key slot has been used or not. i.e. a key has been activated to this slot.
• Key Slot Enable 0-9: Shows if the key that has been activated to this slot is enabled or disabled.
• Random Code Tolerance Count 0-9: This is the number of errors that will be accepted from this key to allow it still to work. This is automatically incremented by the ECU if it detects intermittent or bad communications.
• Key in Switch Status: This determines if a key is inserted.
• Inserted Key Enabled Status: This determines if the inserted key is enabled or disabled in the key settings section.
• Inserted Key Data Validity: This determines if the data from the currently inserted key is valid and accepted or not.

The immobilisation process is quite involved as the key transponder is detected by the ignition barrel and matched to the immobiliser which in turn talks to the steering lock to tell it to unlock which then sends a signal back to immobiliser to allow the key to turn which then matches a code with the engine ecu and if all that goes well it will let the engine start. The engine and immobiliser must be paired. if the key is turning then i would say it is the engine link, if the key wont turn then it is a transponder problem, but potentially like you say they could have physically done something wrong in the fitting process but i would have thought it is more likely electronic.
When my battery is disconnected on my 04 petrol the car sometimes loses the paring between the engine and immobiliser ECUs and it will crank but not start until i pair it again using diagnostics.

thank you very much for that I will take a copy and forward to insurance company I don't understand if the locks etc needed reprogramming and needed to go to land rover why they don't get the whole job done by them. Cheers thank you for all your advise and help Thumbs Up

No bother, when i lost my only key, two programmers tried and failed to get it started but the first guy did get the key cut and and opened the door but the alarm would permanently sound. he did send off the immobiliser to be paired with the key but being a 2006 it had a later immobiliser unit that is controlled via the high speed can i believe whereas the 2002-2005 uses the EWS3D which is why I think it is dealer only and there was a wiring fault as well which may have not helped.
I tried everything but eventually paid £90 each way to be recovered to the main dealer, Guy Salmon, and to be fair they were fantastic and only charged me for an hour.

These weren't the people i used but you can see they only cover the EWS system which is what you have.

when the 06 TD6 i have been working on had the transponder problem where the key wasn't matched, the key wouldn't turn in the ignition and it wouldn't crank either when it was immobilised after i did the fuse removal procedure to override the transponder and steering lock but that is not to say other forces weren't at play as i had tried to work around the transponder.

On my 04 petrol when that was immobilised after losing the paring between immobiliser and engine ecu that would crank but wouldnt start but didnt have fuel.

Bottom line is you need to get it in and have the codes read to see what is going on again but not much fun for you
