Possibel Head Gasket Failure

Hi Guys, my 53 plate Td6 is acting up a bit and I'm concerned that the head gasket is on the way out.

Started the car and it was idling rough, (like it was missing a cylinder). I reversed out of of a parking space and drove forward and it seemed to settle down. Heading out of the carpark (i.e. low speed low revs) for about 100m when it went rough again and I noticed the exhaust was smokey (white smoke) so I pulled over and check oil/coolant etc but levels were fine and no signs of cross contamination.

After that I started it again and it seems to have settled down and there was no noticable white smoke on idle or when revved.

Got home & I removed the inspection covers from the top of the engine to give the injectors a visual - everything looked as it should and there was no damage to the wiring.

The white smoke makes me think that it's the head gasket is passing coolant into the cylinders.

Is this a common problem on 3ltr BMW engines? any other things that could cause this other than HGF?
(car had oil service etc in dec '10 - there is correct amount of coolant & oil in the levels when cold)

thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,

I'm not professing to know what the problem is, but while doing a quick search, I came across the following, maybe useful. It does redirect you to another web site... Embarassed Embarassed

good luck.

Are you losing any water?

There is a kit a garage can place on the expansion tank to see if its contaminated with gases from cylinder head gasket failure.

I would be getting the injectors tested with a leak off test first.

How is it when the engine gets warm (maybe the block had warmed through the second time you started?). It could be a number of glowplugs failed as that would contribute to lumpy running from a cold start. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS
