One of the dedicated electronics / wiring kits are likely the best in the long run. They simply plug into the existing system of the car at the rear offside corner area. I found I didn't need to re-program my car after fitting one to my old 2002. The car still recognised when the trailer was attached, disabled the rear parking sensors, displayed when bulbs were out, flashed t he trailer symbol on the dash when indicating etc etc.

I have also fitted the generic kits to cars as well. They work, but its so much more of a faff to strip and join wires, source a 12V feed etc etc ... and at the end of the day still end up with what looks like a bodge-on (even when done neatly) compared to the dedicated kit. V8 or else ...

For a basic trailer to go to the tip you only need 7 pin 12n single electrics, to take care of lights, indicators and brake lights. Yes the dedicated electrics are expensive but they can be fitted in less than an hour.

I’ve experience of right connections and they can be a bit of a faff, so stick with original you’ll not be sorry... Thumbs Up

Trailer wiring pictures

Here's all the info for any UK/EU/AU trailer setup; US is, err, different (very different!)

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic36665.html

As you are not adding electric brakes or changing to AU standards its just plug-and-play.

* Add the Siemens TCM module to connector C0380 in the rear fuse panel, (there are at least 3 BMW models that will fit)
* Run the TCM cables to C0499 then through the grommet in the spare wheel space down to the tow bar,
* Wire on your selected trailer socket(s).

bye.

Oh, by-the-way, it is almost impossible to fit or remove C0380 to/from the TCM while it is in place, so make sure they are connected before fitting the TCM in place with its M10 nut.

bye again. 2003 TD6, EGR delete, vortex crankcase breather update, performance chip, UHF 2 way, Android head unit, crash camera on dash, always-on rear view camera to mirror screen, LED DRL`s, Electric trailer brake controller. FSR replaced. Pulling 3T caravan all about Australia
