One of the dedicated electronics / wiring kits are likely the best in the long run. They simply plug into the existing system of the car at the rear offside corner area. I found I didn't need to re-program my car after fitting one to my old 2002. The car still recognised when the trailer was attached, disabled the rear parking sensors, displayed when bulbs were out, flashed t he trailer symbol on the dash when indicating etc etc.

For a basic trailer to go to the tip you only need 7 pin 12n single electrics, to take care of lights, indicators and brake lights. Yes the dedicated electrics are expensive but they can be fitted in less than an hour.
