4.4 V8 no fuel pressure before cranking.

I've decided to start a new thread to try and get to the bottom of my issues. It's ruining what should be an enjoyable car to own and I've suffered this issue since purchasing it.

The main problem is that it struggles to start when left overnight or when left at work all day. So far I've replaced Spark plugs, Bosch fuel pump, fuel filter, Bosch maf sensor and cleaned inlet.

I've checked the Schrader valve on the fuel rail this morning and got a tiny dribble out. Switched ignition on, waited 30 seconds, pressed valve again and just a tiny dribble came out.

So I'm guessing it's not building pressure up until it's cranking and that's why it coughs and splutters before firing up normally.

Has anyone had similar issues and what caused it ?

Can anyone offer advice on what I should be checking next ?

if you think that its not getting the pressure up , could it be the fuel pressure regulator thats faulty...

Fitted a brand new fuel filter/regulator at the same time as new Bosch fuel pump. Made no difference to the starting issue.

If you're not getting any pressure at the valve then it must be a pressure issue surely.
I know that the regulator is new, but it could be faulty. I would work backwards from the valve. Possible pipe blockage?.

What I can't understand is why do I have little or no fuel pressure after switching ignition on ? The fuel pump should prime and provide pressure.

I've just checked the valve after the engine has been running and the fuel shoots out.

I found mine was draining fuel back to the tank slowly over time and even when trying to prime car many times it would not. Seemed air locked in fuel system next fuel rail and when trying to start it removes then via the injectors..

The car should have the same fuel pressure when car gets turned off as to when you start next day.. if your pressure is dropping there only so many things which can casue it I have done it alll before on my thread.


Simple way to find your issue is check your fuel pressure when car is running and then check when cars been off for extended amount of time. Fuel pressure testers are very cheap and save a lot time in this as I found out. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

It could be an air leak in the fuel system. Maybe refit your fuel filter and give the o-ring a light coat of grease or petroleum jelly before putting the filter back on.

I had an air leak at the filter on another car which caused it to run rough. I fitted a new o-ring and filter as per above which fixed it. On that car the fuel hose after the filter was transparent and the air bubbles could be easily seen. ______________________________

Been waiting all week for a fuel pressure tester to arrive. Just tried it now to find it doesn't fit the valve on the fuel rail ! The connector on the gauge is too big and none of the adaptors in the kit fit.

Is there a specific type of tester for the Range Rover ?

By coincidence I ran completely out of lpg a few days ago and since then it's started from cold perfectly eveytime BUT now I have a hot start issue ! It'll fire straight up with minimal cranking but then dies straight away, won't rev or idle just cuts out. Takes about 10 tries before it'll start and idle.

So, previously switching off the Lpg and running on petrol didn't improve the cold start but letting it run completely empty has.

Can anyone offer anymore advice on this as I'm definitely going round in circles now ?

Not sure, can't check it at the moment but it's a recent new battery and also new alternator.

The fuel rail pressure release valve is a standard schraeder (not sure of spelling) valve the same as a car tyre I believe . Would it be feasible to apply a light pressure with a foot pump or compressor and check for leaks without blowing a seal ?
There is a push fit connector to the rear right looking at the engine bay where a rigid steel pipe connects to a rubber one you could check.
I don't like LPG as I only do a few miles so don't need it, I think LPG is actually the devil's farts when it comes to the m62 engine!
When mine has been standing for a week the system is still under considerable pressure and releasing the valve still sprays out petrol so something is leaking somewhere regardless of what the pump is going
