Disaster Oil Change! 4.2 SC

Put FF on ramps, removed under trays to allow access to drain plug and filter, got my new oil drainer pan and flexible funnel thingy, raised drain pan on box to make it closer, gingerly unscrewed drain plug by hand after undoing with socket first.............whoosh oil gushes out, dislodges funnel thing, I drop drain plug , it falls into drainer container and blocks hole so Oil overflows, funnel falls to floor ..... 8 litres of Hot oil over me and now on floor.......B*ll*cks! 🙁 What a mess!
What should have been 1/2 hour job too 2 hours and I've had throw away the clothes and trainers I had on , best of all wasn't doing it at home so had drive home sitting on bin bags till could change!
Which idiot positioned drain plug on side of sump!!!!!
All cleaned up now and running sweet on Fuch's Titan Synthetic and K&N oil filter courtesy Opie Oils . Very Happy

Does any one know if there is an 90 degree elbow that could be fitted and drain plug fitted to that so Oil comes out downwards not sideways??

exactly my point.. which is why we see more and more examples of garages and users pumping the oil out rather than drain through sump plug which is a bad practice.

With plenty of warning I tried everything to avoid the oil going everywhere but no luck.. Im glad I had a big pan and big card board lying underneath otherwise I would be crying too..

so echo this.. if someone could invent a solution he will be a godfather Current:

I like the idea and concernwd that of it faila you could be running the car with no oil. Imagine that.. Id be paranoid all the time.. besides how would these work with RRs as the drain plug is pointing towards the front driver side? Current:

Could use a vacuum pump then if you are worried about what's left in the sump then take the drain plug/s out - there's only a dribble to worry about then

We started using a pump now, is so satisfying when you remove the drain plug and only a little trickle comes out!

I wasn't convinced, someone gave us a 8 litre pump and I wouldn't be without it now, it has a float switch so it pumps out 8 and then shuts off so you can empty some out and then carry on.

cass is right, vacuum than drain the rest (very little) oil. However if you wanna have real slick solution "if someone could invent a solution he will be a godfather" 4.4TDV8 engine designers have done exactly that. pipe that you disconnect to drain the oil in 4.4TDV8 is the same pipe you use to vacuum extract the oil. this engine does have second drain plug which is used to drain turbo oil pickup pocket-holds about 3~4 dcl oil. i change my oil in 5k km. intervals and drain secondary oil plug every other oil change.

I feel nervous with this.. imagine the valve fails and next minute you have a seized engine.. Current:

Looks like the Fomoto valve locks so can't come undone, I'd buy one, but as said doesn't list Land Rover.
Surely some UK manufactured thing is available, id be happy with elbow that screws into sump then drain plug into that, anything to get it pointing down!!

Good find mate.. below are the options available. Im thinking we may need an extension but that would further push it towards the frame..

The elbow version is right at the top and the prices are not bad either.. thinking what if upon tightening the elbow doesnt face down then what?

Same situation if a sump plug is not done up properly, but can see where you are coming from as sump plugs are a bit more tried and tested and also the norm.
