buzzing, resonance,vibration

back in november 2016 i had the secondary turbo drain valve fitted and some deployable steps at the same time.... after collecting my westie a noticed on idle a buzzing/resonance/vibration coming mainly from the steering wheel, drivers seat and the cubby box on the centre console, this increased in intensity when the revs went to around 1000rpm..when driving this problem isn't apparent..

because i filled up with asda fuel straight after collecting from the dealer my initial thoughts were the asda fuel was maybe contaminated and might be affecting the injectors i put some diesel additive in to see if that helped, it did not..
when i used up most of that fuel ,i refuelled with shell nitro and made some fast runs hoping if it was clogged up injectors that this would blow out any crud...again no difference.

so in late november 2016 my westie was booked into Grange Landrover for them to check it out...they had it for 4 days and they dropped the subframe and checked the prop and differential housing , but couldnt find any problems..
when i collected my westie , it seemed slightly better but the buzzing/resonance/vibration was still there.
it was suggested that the steps could be the source so with steps out and me standing on them there was no change...

as xmas was coming up and i had a planned trip to the xmas markets in cologne and brussels the westie was booked in for the 3rd January.

when i returned from germany my eldest son who is a master mechanic got the westie on the ramp at his garage and whilst i sat inside he checked underneath and we didnt find any difference to the buzzing/resonance/vibration..

at Grange in january the subframe was again dropped and refitted ,the active suspension mounts were checked and 'chassis ears' were used to try and pinpiont the buzzing/resonance/vibration but nothing was found..
i contacted Amellia at CRC landrover explaining my situation and she got the LR technical assistance dept involved but they couldn't come up with a solution..

i have spoken to some fellow forum members who have 4.4 tdv8's and they all said that their FF's do not have any kind of buzzing/resonance/vibration on idle...

i have options of taking my westie to another dealer to be checked out but before i do that i was wondering if any one can enlighten me to what could be causing this...

Stan,

Have you looked at actually removing the steps completely. Shouldn't take too long to do, 6 bolts per side and a electrical plug.
Just trying to eliminate them completely as they were there when everything was good.

How about asking them to check over the work for the turbo drain. completely remove and check that everything has been done as per the TSB.

Does the buzzing/resonance/vibration change when going lock to lock with the steering wheel when stationary ?? Regards
Mark

Mark, the dealer and my son checked the steps and i had them in and out and actually stood on them thinking that some weight would make a difference ...we havnt taken the steps off though..

the dealer also told me they replicated the turbo drain valve installation by taking all apart and refitting and after the first time they dropped and refitted the subframe the buzzing/resonance/vibration was slightly reduced so i wonder if a new subframe would make any difference..

the steering wheel is worse at certain rotations but the seat/cubby is constant..

I occasionally get vibration from my 4.4 TDV8 WM on cold starting, this goes away when the car is reversed out of the garage and does not happen when the car is started from warm. I have not worried about it, thinking it might just be a diesel thing (this is the only diesel I have had). I don't have steps and while one of my turbos is leaking the drain mod has not yet been done (the car is to be checked next month for any deterioration).

Could it be something to do with the engine mounts? Only Range Rovers since 1988

Hi stan. You know the problems of the td6, as regards resonance, vibration. I have found, that it occurs mostly in access mode, or if moving up to standard height.
Have they in anyway adjusted the air suspension, an update of the software.?
Just trying to think of other things it might be.

Do you get exactly the same feelings if you sit in other seats?
I would be inclined to suspect the way the interior trim etc including the glove box have been refitted rather than the actual steps. One of the DIY step fitters may be able to suggest areas to check? G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Having googled L322 vibration I see there are lots of examples.

LR Monthly says that the most common cause of vibration is propshaft imbalance associated with the centre support bearing in the middle of the split rear propshaft. Only Range Rovers since 1988

@greg, tried in all three height modes and all software up to date..

@mike, trim is secured ok and its mostly in the drivers seat area...

@chris, i dont think it can be the prop as this happens in idle so [afaik] the prop isnt moving....

i've just fitted some 6000k bulbs [very easy] and it might be my ocd but whilst checking the lights ,the engine seemed to be buzzing more than usual....

thansk all for your suggestions so far.. Wink

Hi Stan,

I'm sure your son will have checked - but could it be exhaust related - internal baffles or cat and external mounts and heat shield - I had a resonance on mine I was sure it was from the front , turned out it was the rear heat shield over the silencer!! - Worth a check.

Cheers

Simon

thanks simon, the exhaust, heat shield and exhaust rubbers were checked ok..

there was a slight rattle in the box right under the seat but it was thought it wouldnt be enough to cause the buzzing/resonance/vibration, or would it?...
