Hill hold / hill assist ?

I have just sold my MY2007 3.6 TDV8 that when i stopped on a hill would hold and not roll back no matter how long i was on the hill for. So i could pull up to a set of lights stop and take my foot off the brake and it wouldnt move.

I have a MY2011 Vogue SE TDV8 now and when on the same hill it holds for a short time, second or so, then starts to roll back, is this just a brake adjustment ?

Funny you should say that, how many people feel bad about trading in a car ? I did, how random is that !

I don't think that's what the OP is talking about Stan, he doesn't say he puts the EPB on but simply applies the footbrake then when you release it the car is held until you start to pull away, it wont roll back, my 2009MY and my VW Transporter are the same, hill start assist without using the handbrake (or EPB in the RR), seems strange it doesn't work the same in the later models?

And the Auto EPB release is exactly the same in my 2009 as the later models

I suppose the easy test would be same hill, put hand brake on, neutral and see if it holds. If it doesnt its and adjustment - if it does more work required 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE

Your 2007 didn't automatically put the brakes on, the gearbox would hold it, I think it will be the differences in gearboxes between the models, I've had auto's that don't roll back on hills and others that do... nothing clever going on I think it's just the difference in models... Thumbs Up Pete

I think this is all to do with the super efficient 8 speed ZF gearbox TC. Apparently to save fuel when the car is stationary for a little while some whirlygig contraption decouples the torque converter so very little power drives through the gearbox.

For the technically minded....

The standstill decoupling feature is new for the 8 speed transmission. When the vehicle comes to a standstill (with the brakes
applied), the converter is disconnected from the driveline so that only a slight residual load remains. This further reduces fuel
consumption. Decoupling is by actuating clutch B in the transmission, and is dependent on load and output speed. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Don't think so, he is talking about the vehicle (2007) not rolling back on hills and it now transpires that his new one will because the TC is disengaged after a second...

He'll have to get used to using the Hill Start Assist so his new one acts like his old one....

That's progress for you.... Rolling Eyes Pete

I know this isn't the point of this thread, but why on earth does anyone need something like hill start assist?

For heavens sake, if you can drive you should be able to catch the clutch on a manual straight from the foot brake without rolling back (except on very steep gradients, where you might even need to use the handbrake!), in an auto it's simply inexcusable not to be able to hill start with ease without rolling back. Learn to drive!

i agree..a hill start in an auto is easy because of the inherent creep that is associated with these type of gearboxes..

It's easy in a manual...................if you can drive. Bit like parallel parking, oh, wait a minute, no need to learn that either! Motorway driving, no problem, smart cruise takes of that..............texters mandate! Drives:

In the same vein, why do you need 'park assist'! Same thing, if you can't park a car you shouldn't be driving!!

What next? 'Toilet Assist'!!!!

I know we're veering off topic a bit here, but it's the same with all passive driver 'aids' like these. I have a pathological fear of them simple because the skill of driving will be dumbed down to the very lowest levels. The other worry is when someone used to driving a vehicle with all of these so called 'aids' then has to drive one that doesn't have them.
Lane assist - incapabable of driving in straight lines
Smart cruise control - can now text/phone while on motorway without retribution
Hill start assist - can't drive
Park assist - can't drive.

Lovely example of how bad driving standards are. Went to get hay from local farmer in Fatty with horsebox on the back. Leaving the farm on single track access road, silly little 4x4 coming the other way. We both stopped. Husband gets out of car and asks if I can reverse because his wife was nervous about reversing 50m because of the ditch that was 5m off the track! I made the point by reversing Fatty with 'box the 150m back to a passing place. Idiots!! Drives:
