Is the A/C on? My wifes vw sharan does that in the winter due to the extra fan running. Once switched off manually all is well. Ian

Yeah happens when the A/C is on as i said can drive for about 40 mins and it stays at the point in the picture then for no reason moves to the middle vertical position if i am sitting idling for 5 /10 mins .....

Have noticed it does it more when the temp outside is about -5

Every VW I've had took forever to warm up. I've had three Transporter vans and currently have a Golf TDi as a runabout. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

A part of my thermostat housing broke off and wedged the thermostat open not long after I bought my car in Jan. That caused the gauge to sit quite low like that. Apparently, it's quite a common thing on BMW's I was told, something to do with there being 3 sensors inside the housing, 2 replaceable and one which isn't, it was the one that's not replaceable which broke off and got wedges meaning a new housing was needed.

Over the last week or so with the crazy low outside temperatures, mine's been sitting bang on half way regardless. 2006 Mercedes CLS

It should make no difference if the AC is on at all, when the thermostat is closed there is no water flowing around the radiator to be chilled by the ac fan - that and the fact the fan doesn't come on unless the evaporator temp rises too much...

I agree with the general consensus that you need a new stat!

What would fluctating gauge mean?

Started fine then on to gas fine, then twenty mins in very high then very low.
Stopped and checked all good.
Running low for rest of journey.

Normal levels this afternoon when cooled.
Normally steady as a rock bang in the middle.

Was minus ten this morning. 15MY SDV8 Vogue SE

Hows your antifreeze mix? Maybe a partially blocked radiator from Ice Slush?

Not sure will test mix.
On the way home would not get out of second sector.
Took ages to change over to gas?
Warmed up when stationary but not close to morm. 15MY SDV8 Vogue SE
