TD6 gearbox oil change question?

I've just ordered 20lts of Texaco ETL 7045E and a service kit for the gearbox. My question is would it be benificial for me to change the oil first and run it for a week then fit the new filter and change the oil again?

I have been speaking to my Indy L Rover garage about gearbox oil changes and he said they drop the old and then refill and run it for 20 miles before doing it again . Sounds OK to me . Mines booked in for it next week ..

Thanks, last night I just noticed that the RR is holding back whilst coasting so I tried low range and it had very clunky gear changes. It's a 2005 and done 149,000 I'm hoping a filter & fluid change is in time to save the box Sad

Be aware that you only get just over half the fluid out by just draining the sump. So you need to do several changes in order to get close to 100% clean oil.

If you are going to drain again after the initial change, makes sense to replace the filter then. .

That's why I am thinking I will do an oil change on its own, then after running that for a week I will drain it & then fit the new filter and change the oil again. I've not read of anyone doing this way that's way I thought I would ask the question Thumbs Up

Sorry Dr Meat I forgot to add that my garage said they would clean out the oil cooler pipes too as part of the gearbox service . Filter change too, of course. Hope all goes well for you.

Don't think they need cleaning out, if they do then your gearbox is defo toast.... what happens is that they collapse and prevent oil circulating, they can look fine on the outside but the inner layers collapse.... if you have trouble with gearbox overheat then just change them...

The oil coolers can clog up but that is in the water side of the cooler.... Thumbs Up Pete

May be a silly question but is there no way you can get 100%

You can get close with a power flush but you have to pay someone to do it, buy a 20ltr tub of oil and you get darn close.... and it's cheaper..... Thumbs Up

You can't get it all out as the TC is full of it and it doesn't drain out, also loads in the valve block and oil ways, cooler pipes and cooler.... Thumbs Up Pete

All you do is disconnect a cooler pipe at the front.
Put pipes into a large container e.g 5l or 20l


Run the engine for about 30 seconds (have an assistant tell you when the oil stops) and all the oil is pumped out the TC.
Drain remaining oil from the sump.

Just doing the first oil change today and the oil looks spot on no metal in Very Happy but the linkage on the driver's side of the box has some fluid around it and also a wet pipe to the transmission cooler. Is the linkage seal an easy fix?
