Rear diff heavily corroded

Asking for some advice. Have been changing the fluids on my 2009 tdv8 autobiography. Front diff and transfer case no problem.

The rear diff is so heavily corroded that I am apprehensive about trying to remove the fill plug - drain plug looks fine.

When I saw heavily corroded the casting is flaking badly. If it wasn’t for the fact is doesn’t have a tow bar I would say the rear end has been used to launch boats in the sea. Sorry I should have taken a photo

I have heard of filling through the breather pipe. Where is it and how practical is it to do?

Any suggestions?

Take it to a garage to do, a bit of heat and it will come off fine...

I recon it would be a very messy job doing it through the breather and how do you know you have the correct amount... it's never what the book says it will be..!! Pete

Mine was so corroded, There was absolutely no way was it ever coming out & believe me I tried everything (Small 12 mm fill plug type).
In the end I filled through the breather, but it's a slow process. Whistle

Thanks for the advice - I didn’t see the breather, I take it it’s on the top somewhere

Will try some heat and we also have an excellent specialist is the area - MiD Engineering in Wantage. Maybe before I round off the fill plug it’s best just to give it to them. I doubt the filler plug has been off for some time….

Give the area around the fill plug a good scrub with a wire brush, then over the course of a couple of days spray some penetrating oil on it and just before you go to remove it, apply some heat to it and it should come out pretty easily.

Just don't round it before you get to the heat stage, whatever you do Smile
