I reckon side by side the 5.0 is probably marginally better on fuel than the 4.2. But and the big but! Is that the 5.0 is so good that you cannot help but enjoy it and drive it accordingly so there is probably not much in it.

Direct injection is going to bring a fair improvement but is probably wiped out by the 20% increase in swept volume so ignoring official figures like you have to these days it's much a muchness , The old engineers adage " to make the power you need to use the fuel " so 4.2L v 5L = 400 hp v 500 hp is roughly 12.5% increase in efficiency v 20% increase in capacity = sod all difference in the real world . 2008 MY Supercharged

Yes I think I will stick with the 4.4 tdv8 idea then, just thought if the purchase of the 5.0 originally was cheaper then it would be possibly worth it, saying that though I think the additional fuel costs would soon outweigh this. |

Based on what my fuel card bill is each month I seem to average about 21 in a 5.0. Very significantly less (14 ish) when we've been away with the caravan |

It woke be around that figure, maybe a bit more. 10 plate onwards. The spec is important to me and obviously the sc model comes fully loaded where not all 4.4s do. |
