Breakdown Cover... Which one?

Hello all,

I'm just trying to arrange some breakdown cover for the RR (not that I'm likely to need it Laughing )
Does anyone out there have any good or bad experiences with such cover and any recommendations.
I can see that a few of them do the scheme where you initially pay for the repair and then get refunded later, you can save a few quid this way, but is it worth any future hassle for the sake of £20 or so.

Thanks all,

Ian

Your FFRR will never breakdown if it doesn't know the journey is urgent/important/essential Thumbs Up

On my previous RR, i used AA with their breakdown warranty repair cover. Whilst more expensive than others, i found them to be very good, Good Service and never tried to go back on payments when my battery/alternator went and needed replacing. 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

Was with the AA since I was 17 years old, changed to the RAC about 14 years ago as the AA prices kept going up every year and I never used them once. Then last year the RAC tried to stuff me with price hikes and after asking if they could do any deals to which they said no I did a bit of research and GEM Motoring Assist seemed to get top marks so I've been with them the last 12 months. Oddly enough the RAC have been trying to offer me all sorts of offers since leaving them Whistle

Thanks for the replies guys.

rr driver - Thanks mate, I'm only after breakdown cover tbh. The reason being is that I intend to do my own servicing and that cover you describe requires a VAT registered garage to undertake the servicing.
Interestingly 47p2, Gem Motoring assist seemed to be my top choice too. I think i'll go with them.

Cheers,

Ian

I am with the AA - I just cancel the renewal every year and re-join a day later as a new customer for the "brand new customer only" discount. The AA apparently treat any Range Rover breakdown as a VIP breakdown and I even had Land Rover themselves come out to my P38 a couple of years ago when the immobilizer lost contact with the key.

I was with the RAC until they stopped covering trailers, they let me find out when I called them for a failed stub axle on a jet ski trailer - they attended after charging me £500 to get me out of danger.

Thanks belldarr, Both the AA and the RAC seem so damned expensive. Nearly double of some of their rivals.

AA all the way through Quidco..

First year cost me £45 and had, breakdown, recovery and home start.

This year it was around £75 all in for the above plus onward travel.

Owning an older car the unlimited call outs is well worth it as most places used to be 5-6 in a year... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Breakdown or just recovery?
I use Green Euro recovery it's about £55 a year and covers all europe as I go to France a lot.
Got the family and FF home when gearbox went in Paris. Was a bit of a saga but was not out of pocket at the end, I estimate it must have cost over a £1000 to get us home so best £50 I ever spent.
On a side note for uk recovery I can't fault Autonational, I got a deal with them attached to an insurance policy for £15 years ago still paying £15 each for the MG and the lads Micra. Used them when he broke down and when I binned MG but come renewal still £15 each Bargin.
For Repairs Warranty Direct they do a lite policy about £125 covers major mechanical faults but you have to "breakdown" can be a saga as you have to jump through hoops but paid out for mine twice. Mine was a blue one! Smile

I worked for one of the big two for over 13 years. They were both great in the old mutual days when they were true membership organisations. But now they are faceless corporates, penny pinching and having to jump through all the hoops that PLCs' need to do to keep the shareholders happy.

I wouldn't touch either with a barge pole so I went for a Nationwide FlexPlus current account. For £10 per month you get:-

- UK & European Breakdown and Recovery Assistance, Cover in any vehicle. Your vehicle is covered by anyone driving it. Includes home start, onward travel. Includes caravans and trailers up to a certain length / weight (not sure exact details).
- Worldwide family mobile phone insurance
- Worldwide family travel insurance
- Extended warranty on appliances

http://www.nationwide.co.uk/products/curre...mpbenefits

The account pays 3% interest on the first £2,500 so the interest all but wipes out the £10 fee. A no brainer in my opinion! Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

I have RAC European - it's bundled with a bank account - along with family travel insurance - as I needed both, it worked out cheaper to have a bank account with a monthly charge than buy both policies.

I've used the RAC a couple of times - both in France - and they have been very good

What confused me about the original question is that they only cover roadside - any parts or further work is down to you to pay for.

Last year I blew a radiator as I arrived at a ski resort - they collected the car & took it to a local garage who repaired it - the RAC paid for the recovery and arranged & paid for a cab for me to collect, but the garage bills were mine.

I am with the RAC. I have a joint membership with my wife. We have 4 vehicles between us, so have used them a number of times. If you get cover, get the full package i.e. Home start, breakdown recovery, onward travel etc.

When a drive shaft broke on my FF, they turned up with a trailer (they realised it was a big car lol), took my car to a garage for repair, then drove me home afterwards.

It's piece of mind to me. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE
