They're all basically insurance policies and like all insurance policies it's worth reading the fine print to see what you're actually getting, the cheapest isn't always the best.

For me i just want something that will either fix my car at the road side if it's a simple fix (broken fan belt, burst hose etc) or tow my car home. I'm not bothered about Home start, i can fix it myself there.

A lot of them will only tow your car to a nearby garage and dump it there to get it fixed and possibly give you a hire car to continue your journey.

I went with the AA, simply because i have my mum added on my policy as an additional policy holder. Which covers her for any car she drives or is driven in. For me it worked out the cheapest way of doing it, rather than having two separate policies for each vehicle. I get my european break down cover as part of a bargain travel insurance package through work.

For what it's worth LR Assist is part of AA.
I'm with Green Flag just now, no claims experience - long may that continue. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Got a good price with rac a couple of years ago, cannot remember the cover but it was one that got me home from anywhere in uk not just the nearest garage.I hadn't realised it was auto renewal and with a mix up when moving house they almost doubled it to £120.Even their online new customer was over £20 cheaper so after I called them and vented my fury they dropped it to £80 but as a result I saw some of the other companies quotes so will be looking elsewhere next time.amazingly I havnt needed to use them but I dare not go without it even though I used to go years without it in other vehicles, the full fat just fills you with confidence !!

All the manufacturer ones are contracted out. VAG Group used to use Mondial Assist, even though they turned up in VW liveried vehicles.
I suppose they go out to tender every so often so in theory they could change suppliers. But the AA were Rover group's supplier for decades.

The big two both use sub contractors now too, not just for larger vehicles but for cars. You might get a local recovery firm turn up rather than someone in a Yellow or Orange van.

Wow, a big thank you to everyone who replied.
I don't need European travel as I don't intend to drive on the continent during the next 12 months.
I have done a fair bit of research based on your replies and GEM appears to be very good and well priced too. They came top in 2015 for service.
It's always going to be one of those unknowns until you actually have to use them but they do have the best reviews.
You get all of the cover for £80 or £60 if you pay at the time and claim back. Bear in mind the RAC were £120 and the AA £155. I even signed up to Quidco for the AA but couldn't get anywhere near.
Time will tell no doubt but thanks to everyone for the advice.

Regards,

Ian

- UK & European Breakdown and Recovery Assistance, Cover in any vehicle. Your vehicle is covered by anyone driving it. Includes home start, onward travel. Includes caravans and trailers up to a certain length / weight (not sure exact details).
- Worldwide family mobile phone insurance
- Worldwide family travel insurance
- Extended warranty on appliances

The account pays 3% interest on the first £2,500 so the interest all but wipes out the £10 fee. A no brainer in my opinion! Thumbs Up[/quote]

I have this cover as well and used the breakdown recovery service and hire car option when the water pump went pop on the Fatty. Agree, no brainer! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up SDV8 AB MY 2019

I'm with RAC - roadside, recovery, at home. Cost £48 per year with Tesco Clubcard Boost (covers me for any vehicle I'm driving).

Not had to use them recently but they have been good when I used them many years ago.

I was a member of GEM for many years. Again, I didn't have to use them. They use local contractors, so to some extent they are only as good as the local contractor.

Within Twenty minutes of buying the car a gearbox problem showed !!!!!
I took the £60 option to take break down cover with my insurance which was also taken out twenty minutes prior to the break down!
I made a phone call to my broker "Bluefin" at Lincoln " who took up the quest to sort it all out for me. I just can't praise them enough. They sorted recovery within minutes. Brilliant service give Julie a ring at Blue fin Lincoln. Eddie the eagle watch out 👀

The car was recovered from Aintre on Grand national day within an hour of making the call and delivered to my doorstep the following Monday a brand new car that had 160 miles on the clock was provided to me filled with fuel for the weekend until they picked it up at the same time as they dropped the FF off at my home in Lincolnshire.
Can't get better than that. Eddie the eagle watch out 👀
