My Landcruisers started with an 80 series, which apart from wanting to wander everywhere, especially when towing, was the most reliable. But that didn't stop it spitting it's water pump though the rad at 1 a.m. on a Bank holiday weekend In the end the gearbox self destructed, and it was scrapped as it also need a steering box, full set of calipers, the turbo was less than healthy and the tin worm was taking hold, and it had only done 550000 miles, see they are weak

If you are doubting whether the engine rear seal isleaking, or the gearbox front seal is leaking, you might want to compare the dripped evidence, with a sample from say the dipstick, or a carefull dribble from the sump nut on the gearbox. Your engine oil can be changed to prove it. (Colour wise) But you might have a leak up top, and the engine oil is sitting on the inlet manifold, and overflowing through a tiny hole at the back, and then down the rear face of the engine, and out the bottom. You should be very sure it is a seal and rule out the chance of the rocker cover, or similar easily rectified/diagnosed leak well before you take out the box. It is fairly common on this engine, for the coolant system to leak on the 'valley pan gasket' and this also overflows down rear of engine and drips out same area. Transfer oil is other end of box so it's not that.

@ Johnboyairey I have looked at the back of engine block and valley gasket, nothing that I could see but only a small amount on the valley, nothing to even worry about though. If it dont work.......burn it!

if you get under, and with some old toothbrush type tool, clean inside that square hole, on the rear of engine, and the bowl of bellhousing. when clean and dry, run it up for 15mins, and when stopped see if it running down rear of engine face, or bowl of bellhousing, this will tell you if its engine oil, from engine, or gearbox oil, which may be hanging off torque converter as a drip, or wetted streaks. this might point you to where to wonder next.

Great to hear. Those rocker gaskets work well, but when they leak, they are not obvious, and throw down oil to awkward places. Mine are newish, but sometimes drip onto the exhaust manifolds, so car sometimes smells of hot oil.
