Reduced Engine Performance message

So, I'm driving home after a good day's shooting and I get the message "Reduced Engine Performance". Nothing seemed untoward, engine still pulled, kick down not noticeably different and happily cruised up the A21 at 70. I've had the message on the Freelander 2 I had before the FF, and then it was VERY noticeable and that time the problem was the DPF (the car was 4 months old at the time!)

It was raining and I'd been through a couple of puddles, but there was nothing to give a clue anything was amiss. Engine pulled strongly and yesterday it got a long motorway run, so I can't see it being a DPF issue.

All very odd; I'm going to take it to my trusted dealer, but wondered whether anyone else had experienced anything similar.

Cheers

Andy

Thanks, but that's way too technical for me! I'd struggle to understand it.

Yes. Lots of comments about petrol V8s which don't help, plus a couple of comments about split turbo hose, which is apparently an easy fix. I was asking the members on the off chance one of them might have experienced something similar.

Three thoughts from experience, could be first sign of alternator failing, battery having a dead cell or I agree with the last comment, check your fuel level. Have had all three on a previous car. Hope these help. Rehab is for quitters!!!

Is it a 3.6 or a 4.4 you are enquiring about sir? They both have a set of individual problems, but would need to know which model you have?

And if its a 3.6 have you already checked & eliminated the hoses ?

Were you doing anything particularly different at the time - accelerating hard for example ?

Did the warning disappear or did you just ignore it and keep driving ? Or restart the car and it went away ?

Has it only happened once ?

The value of searching is you can tell us what you've checked already & eliminated Razz

Thanks for all the replies.

Mine is a 3.6 TDV8, 2010MY. There was around half a tank of fuel on board and I was driving normally on country roads. There was a lot of standing water following heavy rain earlier in the day and I had driven through puddles to remain on my side of the road as vehicles approached from the opposite direction. The warning appeared, but there was no noticeable change in engine performance. I drove on carefully, and on joining a dual carriageway eased the speed up gradually to 65-70 mph, again with no apparent difficulty. When I got home, I stopped the engine, restarted after a few seconds and the message returned. I switched off again, left it for about 30 secs then restarted, and no message came on. That said I only had the engine on long enough to lower the suspension to access mode (as I always do when parking up).

The battery is what was in the car when I bought it at 3 years old. Has never caused any problems before and the car always starts on the first push of the button. It has 60k miles on it, used 95% of the time on long journeys with long periods of not being used, often over a week. I wouldn't know how to check turbo hoses, but a bit of digging around suggests this might be the issue. I'll contact my dealer tomorrow and book it in. I've still got a LR warranty, so hopefully that will cover it!

Usually with the turbo / intercooler hoses, the car goes into limp mode. It's also fairly easily recreated - just accelerate really hard - you will usually also see a trail of black smoke.

There's a guide here for checking & replacing - it's a quick & easy job, but your hands will get quite dirty.

The fact that you didn't lose power sounds like it maybe something different.

It could be a spurious fault caused by a battery issue - they do tend to start throwing up random fault messages as they are on the way out - and 5 years is about right for needing a replacement.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing though - if you have a LR warranty, then let them have a look & diagnose Thumbs Up

Car went to the dealers and they plugged it in. Turns out its one of the EGR valves, which they will replace. Price for the work was £698 all in, covered by LR extended warranty. I did ask if both sides should be done, but the warranty only covers the failed part, so the second would be down to me, so I'll leave it.

How much extra would both sides have been - any saving in doing 2 together ?

I have no idea whether they tend to fail in pairs, but think I'd have done both.

The dealer said only one had failed, so no point doing both. I said Sod's law would mean the other would fail soon afterwards, but the dealer said that would be unusual in his experience. To be honest, I'm not that fussed, because if the other one does go, I'm still covered by warranty. Of course many on here will say I should have got both done at the same time!

Interesting to see what happens to your turbo now? As they have a funny habit of going BANG very soon after changing EGR’s... Especially if its the N.S. Bank EGR... Rolling Eyes
