Half wolf whistle and bearing noise (new member)

Found this site recently. Best thing since sliced bread.
Recently bought my range rover and am now finding out what it takes to keep them healthy.
Have 2 questions:- when I take my foot of the throttle I get the second half of a 'wolf whistle'. I've been told this is normal (Specialist), can't be true, can it, on a car that cost all those pounds when new?
Other problem is a front end 'bearing noise', sounds like a flat spot on a tyre. Is this the start of the infamous drive failure (contacted dealer who sold car new to se if it had been done, didn't get much joy there, suprise suprise). The local specialist, who was quite helpful, suggested a garage with a 4 wheel drive rolling road to source problem.

Phil, welcome to the forums.

The whistle on easing off the accelerator is a characteristic of the TD6, even the BMW cars with the same engine do it (even the most recent X5's with the sequential turbos have it but to a lesser loudness!). It does seem to be louder on some cars than on others - on my old TD6 it was very noticable but not intrusive. TDv8 isn't a BMW engine and doesn't suffer from it.

If you take your VIN number into any main dealer they should be able to access your car's full service history (or lack of it!) as they are all kept centrally at Land Rover. They can also check unscheduled maintainance, optional extras fitted etc etc. Of course this all depends on whether earlier owners bothered to take their cars to a franchised dealership for servicing and fitting of accessories. I cannot really help any more than that on the rumbling that you report 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

Thanks for the information, will just have to put up with women turning around when I pull my foot up (no pun intended). I've had the bearing noise for the last 2-3,000 miles and looking at the history of the drive failures, it should have gone pear shape before now. Again, thanks for your help.
Regards
Phil

Phil

I had bearing type noises from the front, turned out to be the left front driveshaft had lost its splines.

Get somebody to drive the car slowly on full lock and stand outside listening, should be quiet with no clunks or grinding.

I hear no whistles in mine (listened very carefully on the way to work this morning). I can only hear the slightest whistle with the window open - especially under an overpass or between tall city buildings (certainly not enough to turn women' heads. Or maybe I always thought they were turning for another reason... Confused ) I do sit on the proper side while driving, though. Maybe the additional 12" from the turbo makes the difference. Laughing

Aside from Ian's sound advice:
Bearing noise will show/increase when the bearing is especially loaded: right high speed turn for left wheel bearing, etc. I've not been unfortunate enough to experience a front diff failure, but from what I've read it comes with no prior warning. Dealer service records will indicate whether the recall was performed. If not, get it done!

Thanks all for the info.
It does sound like the bearing noise is from front left. Any idea of cost of replacement?
The noise doesn't seem to be affected by load, above 25mph can't hear it.
Again thanks for the help all.

regards
Phil
