I've searched the forum but can't find out if this is a common problem.

Was suffering from vibration in the 'body' of the car (and now that I reflect on it, there has been some whine from the transmission).

The LR dealer has been great and diagnosed that the rear diff has failed and is causing the problem.

WarrantyWise are refusing to cover the cost of replacement, because it hasn't catastrophically failed, and its down to normal wear and tear. Their independent engineer has viewed the car and agrees that the diff is causing the problem.

I've got full LR service history, and 95k miles on the car. Mainly motorway driving, no offroad.

My question is, is this premature wear and tear failure - should the diff reasonably last longer than this.

Really p***ed with WarrantyWise, I think they just don't want to cover the cost.

Have they said they will cover it still if it fails soon though???

I'd be tempted to put some sand in there and run it for a bit then flush it out, or drain it take the cover off and use a lump hammer and cold chisel...

Not saying any of this is a good idea mind

TBH i haven't heard of any others but 1 failing which is documented somewhere on here but 1 in the many that are on here and with much higher miles is a sign its a rare failure.

Hi land rover extended warranty also refuse to cover anything on mine regarding the rear diff or gearbox leak.

Spent a lot on wonderful LR engineering this month and last. Pretty off myself to!

Just for info, on the subject of rear diff failure.
I bought a brand new 2.5td P38 in January 2000, : rear diff failed in March 2000 less than 2000 miles.
Obviously changed under warranty. Did 100k+ with no further problems.

It's not a common problem, however it is well documented on here that the rear diff oils require attention sooner than LR say as the can appear very dirty/rusty at quite low mileage.

Not heard of a diff failing through wear an tear. The front diff on earlier cars was problematic, but was fixed under Lr recall/warranty. If they are refusing to pay out (which doesn't supprise me in the slightest) then it is worth having yours rebuilt by a specialist which would give you more peace of mind than a used one, and come with a warranty. They can strip them and rebuild them replacing any worn parts. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If WW wont cover it then I'd look to a transmission specialist to get the diff re built, failing that good old fleabay for one off a breaker  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
