I can't think of any reason why you couldn't disconnect the battery -ve terminal and re-connect on your return.
You won't have any alarm function though.
On reconnection after starting the car you will need to turn the steering wheel full lock each way.
I assume your battery is ok?
You really shouldn't need to worry about 8 days unless you know of a fault causing a battery drain.

The alternative to disconnecting the battery is to leave it connected as normal and buy a smaller battery to sit in the boot which together with a set of jump leads would allow you to start the car should the worst happen.
I've tried a 40AH battery to see if it would work and had no problem, was in summer though not sure about during the winter.
As Stan has pointed out be sure to check that you can open the car manually with the key before you leave it.
Carrying a set of jump leads in the car is quite useful you can usually find someone to let you use their car to jumpstart your own should the worst happen.
You could always try a solar panel as it's summer it might be quite effective. Probably need about 10-15W output.

I remember taking the kids to see some of the last Concord take offs at Heathrow, the thunderous roar from those engines with blue flame afterburners used to shake the fillings in my teeth, it was absolutely awesome! But laughed at the orchestra of car alarms all chirping from the (parallel to runway) car parks. There were three take offs a day I think. But I bet there is an on hand man with sack truck battery on leads, making a quick buck even today.

Spare battery or a booster pack has to be a better option - even just a set of jump leads - there will always be someone who will stop if you're standing in a car park with jump leads in your hand.

I keep a set of these in the boot with my spare wheel. Booster pack would be better, but takes up too much space.

If you're leaving it at one of the decent airport car parking sites they'll be well used to flat batteries and be able to jump it for you should you need it.
