2003 v8 zt 5 speed gearbox issue, only had it a week!

Hi, I have just got a 2003 v8 4.4 autobiography which I've always wanted, but has started to develop a fault with the gearbox, seemed to start with it holding revs up and not changing up the box correctly, then goes into transmission overheat, and transmission failsafe. Also noticed that the gear select indicator on the instrument cluster keeps disappearing from the display? At other times seems to drive with no issue, especially when from cold. Have read various different articles all saying different things, any advice would be appreciated
Thanks in advance..

If it's driving well from cold I would suspect the oil cooler and rad.

if you have got transmission overheat a few times now, you need to get the gearbox oil changed at least. as when it overheats the oil degrade much faster then normal.

but the radiator and gearbox cooler should be replaced, common issue. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Is it a big job to replace those?
Front end have to come off?
Any recommendations for place to do it and likely cost? I'm near Yeovil in Somerset.

Gearbox seems to be getting worse, went out today and it started ok, but the autobox not changing gear and showing Transmission Failsafe in display from start, after a few miles then shows Tranmission Overheat.

Need to get it looked at this week i think Sad Not a good start!

Find local Land Rover indie and ask there cost for rad and gearbox cooler and gearbox oil change.

I use http://www.lrsengineering.co.uk and http://www.automatic-gearbox.co.uk for my gearbox.

Really though need to stop driving it with gearbox overheat as you will end up needing a gearbox rebuild and that’s near 2k mark. You really don’t want to damaged the gearbox. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

From memory you can't change all the fluid in one go without a strip down so I think the correct fluid is around £80, I changed my cooler stat, pipes and cooler( it's not a rad as such as it feeds off the lower section of the main rad to warm cold oil and cool hot oil) which can be another issue as very common is the bottom section of the main rad blocks up and doesn't feed the transmission cooler. I bought my bits from island 4x4 for around £200 I think minus the main rad and fluid. You must use the correct fluid

I would be surprised if genuine overheating is the only issue but RRPhil is your man for taking you down the diagnostic route to find any other underlying cause for the overheat strategy.

As already mentioned , the previous owner knew it was on its way so palmed it off on the next love struck fool to fall for the dirty bit of RR skirt, as I did - but I love her, she is like no other i have ever been in ...., the early RR l323 is a mermaid and will draw you onto the rocks if you let it😬

Bought it for a very reasonable price, expected to have to pay out on it at some point!
