Not getting lost with an iPad

I'm after some advice, please.

Vacation looms and I'll need some gps navigation help. Now, as the FFRR won't fit in my carry-on luggage Big Cry I was hoping to use my iPad.

Any advice on a good app? I've tried a few over the past few days and been shocked at how bad they were. (And we complain about the LR sat nav!)

I'd love to just use Apple maps, as they seem quick and offer turn-by-turn navigation, but I won't have any network coverage. I need an app that allows me to download maps in advance and can be used without a 3G/4G connection.

I have Gaia, which is great off road, but not appropriate and doesn't do the turn by turn.

I also have the free version of Sygic, which I found is poor, rather inaccurate and takes forever to search an address. I'm underwhelmed.

Tried GPS Copilot and Galileo, neither could find my house, and both had old, poor maps. Routes that both suggested in areas I know would not work in real life (unless you like urban off-roading in your FFRR).

So, any suggestions? Of course, free apps are preferred.

Thanks in advance.

Depends what country you're in really - what works well in Europe, may not work well on your side of the pond Whistle

Waze gets a very good review. I have it on a Samsung phone but haven't tried it as an iPad app. Having wifi only my iPad doesn't have inbuilt GPS Twisted Evil

PS Just realised where you are. Don't know if it is valid for you. John

Thanks. Forgot to mention maps.me but I was also didn't do what was required.

Alastair, good point. I'm off to a small, rarely mapped, obscure country called the United States. Surely someone has mapped it. Mr. Green

I'll give that a try, Weegee. Thx. I've also got the wifi only iPad, but I've got a little Elf gps plugin for it.

I do however use it (paid, worldwide, lifetime) on my Galaxy Note and Galaxy S3 phone and it works very well for me. The only complaint is that I would like a better "next turn" in the Nav screen but it finds where I need to go very well in Singapore and Malaysia.

It uses TomTom maps apparently and my Tom Tom Rider always did very well (in the USA as well for a big trip there in 2007 on the motorbike as well as in Europe where I bought it).

My sister had the free Sygic on her iPad here and it was crap, they didn't use it after the first day. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
