My RR has a slow drain over a couple of weeks (FSR - on order) but i only use the car at the moment couple of times every fortnight, can I connect the charger to the battery while its still in the engine bay, and connected (+ and -) to the car?

Yes...mines on the CTek right now . I give it a good charge every couple of weeks as I only do low miles.

I have an extra tow socket wired to the rear fuse panel live and neg for this very purpose...just plugged the charger in via the socket and off it goes but a direct connection to the battery is fine as long as the charger is fit for that purpose ( which the CTEK is) GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

Same as Paul, I have the CTEK comfort connector on my battery and charge up every few weeks, as I only do about 10 mile a day and watch TV a bit at lunch times......

As already said, your charger must be capable of "maintaining" ie it stops charging when the battery is full and tops up after that. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Connected 2 leads - one from positive which has a INLINE FUSE rated at 10 Amps near the to positive battery and then have armor cable that runs down the inside wing tie clipped to the inner wing (no where near the FBH) its RED armor cable so shows its live - comes out under the grill -l tie clipped in.
The inlet plug under the grill has a water/dust cover on. Its a matter just to un-clip the cover - connect a male to female plug on to the charger.

Connect to whichever is most convenient for you.

or through the white trailer electric socket if you have one - saves opening the bonnet and plugs straight in if you wire a cable to the appropriate trailer plug to plug straight into the car socket - this is the quickest and safest way inho.

Ive just taken delivery of my new L405! Love it.

It's safely garaged and will be my special car.

I usually keep my cars on ctek maintainers and fit the ctek fly leads to the battery terminals for ease.

Any problems with this on a FFRR? I have them in my Jags.

My first step is to find the battery!

I don't know about the 405, but when I had a battery failure on my 2004 322 4.4 (in a field by the Tweed on a Friday evening, sorted by Donald Lees Recovery of Galashiels who had the off road capacity to reach me) I needed to keep the battery alive over the weekend and had just a Triumph motorcycle branded trickle charger with a power socket adaptor to hand. I plugged that into the cigarette lighter socket and the charger showed it was working. I then just shut the (front) door on the charger cable and locked the car. There seemed no damage to cable or door seal (or the car's electrics) and the car started on the Monday and I got a new battery.
If I needed to do something like that now I would try the power socket behind the cubby box rather than the cigarette lighter socket as LR advise against plugging appliances into them, but I have not verified that this would work and getting an adaptor and plugging into the towing electrics is obviously a better long term solution. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Saves me removing covers and panels to try to find it!

Nothing in the manual about battery location....

Obviously hidden under a plastic cover somewhere.

I have an Optimate charger and I bought an extended lead to connect to the battery. I also use the trailer socket using another Optimate cable and a plug I bought from a caravan shop.
