Some have come with the proper aerial connectors and some haven't... wait and see, if not Halfords sell them..

The gold connectors are for the sub woofer if you want to wire that in, I didn't bother on mine, it sounds fine without it...

Make sure you get the long lead that goes to the boot, some it's included, others it's an extra...

That's the good thing about doing it in the boot first, you can still use the car and check you have all you need and it sounds OK and everything works...

When you do fit it don't forget to NOT turn the ignition on with the front seat unplugged or your airbag light will come on and you need an IID tool or similar to turn it off.... Thumbs Up

If you have trouble PM me and I'll send you my number... Thumbs Up Pete

I am doing exactly as you did so I will not need the gold things you mentioned !

I had already enquired about the 6mtr extension cable as per your instructions.

I will get a Fakra thingy just in case so I can just start when it all comes in.

Do I still need a 6 mtr aerial lead or is there already one there in the old system ?

Thanks so much for your advice and offer of support, I will email pictures once done (in a few weeks)

My biggest challenge is colours....I only see in shades of green and grey

You will need a 6mtr aerial lead as well, get a decent one as it will be running with other wires and you may get interference...

I suggest you mark every wire with masking tape or something, identify the wire from the pin numbers then mark them before cutting... Or get a friend to tell you the colours before you cut...

There are several speaker wires that for some ridiculous reason are the same colours...!!! Pete

Hi all

am I correct to assume that all speakers get wired in except for the middle speaker on the dash ?

Is it still loud enough ?

I have ordered my head unit now and needless to say am now getting nervous !

The middle speaker in the dash is a take off from one of the front door speakers so it will work as well...

I can't have mine full volume it's too loud and sounds like it would blow the speakers if you left it there for any length of time... I haven't bothered with the sub woofer and I use the front centre speaker for the CB when laning so I'm down to 10 speakers... Pete

I would love to have a good at this but I'm a chicken buck, buck...

Questions:

I presume its a single disc player DVD and music hence the removal of all of LR gear?
It does not come with satnav software and that has to be installed separately?
How does the current reversing camera work with these units?
Do these work in conjunction with the harman kardon system?
Is the watching live TV feature still available and does it work while driving?

Shame you cant wire in a front facing camera and use front and back recording while driving to a SD card.

Thanks

Sad Sorry Bud your car is too new for this unit Big Cry

It is only for the BMW non touch screen cars 2002 - 2004, at some point in late 2004 L/R changed the Audio Nav unit to a Ford based system, which uses the M.O.S.T. system and not Can Bus.......... If you have the touch screen you are pretty much screwed as to upgrades, other than the L/R add ons Sad Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Just to Censored you off a bit more..

Single disc CD DVD player but will also play movies from an SD card or (if you get the right one) your iPhone or iPod
90% come with free satnav software usually IGO which IMHO is better than tomtom...
Current reversing camera will work with a bit of re wiring...
Harman Kardon amp won't work with it unfortunately..
Ifd you buy the TV unit it will work whenever you want...
already comes with software for a front camera that records onto 32gb SD card, don't know about recording the rear though

You need your head unit for the 4x4 FBH and other stuff that runs off it, nothing to stop you fitting the standard unit in the glovebox (they do fit at the back out the way) and fitting one of these... depends how much you use the "other" features on the original system as to whether you think it's worth it or not...

As the man said...."Anything is possible, how much money have you got?"

Oh and by the way, there is an EDIT button for your posts...............................somewhere below here Pete

Whistle Of coarse that isn't to say that it is impossible to fit one in a later ffrr, BUT, you wont have steering wheel control, and you'd have to move the existing screen into the glovebox, otherwise you'll crash the fiber optic system, and that does a lot more than just make music..... And as you have already identified you will loose the Logic 7, and you'll have to hard wire all the speakers.... lot of work.... not a great gain Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Thanks

This has been a great thread. I',m looking to install this into my 2004 Autobiography and the insights from people who have done this before have been very helpful - excellent.

Thanks

Pete

In every conversion thread people use a curved head unit which doesn't exactly fit the dash (LR unit is straight). I google for an X5 head unit and it seems there are some out there which are curved much less than the Erisin units:

has anyone used a unit like this already?
