Tow Bar Height Grrrr !!

What were Land Rover thinking ??? What is the most popular trailer in the country yes you guessed it an Ifor Williams therefore why sell a tow bar to low to attach to one.

As some of you might know I have only just replaced my trusty old P38 with a fullfat and I am starting to sort some bits and pieces out, fullfat sticker on, crappy removable towbar off and fit a proper one.

So its back off the car and as I don't have a decent pillar drill at home or 16.5mm drill bits its off to the firm that does all our fabrication work this week for some more holes, might get them to cut the bottom off as well as it is a bit low / plough.

Any way in the for sale section anybody want a removable towbar and receiver c/w cubby hole converter to keep it in. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The UE standard for towball height is between 14 and 16.5 inches from the floor to the centre line of the ball. If yours is inside those measurements then the trailer isthe non-conforming item. I have the farmer's hitch like you and on the top set of holes with a regular towball mine sits at just under 16 inches. Thumbs Up

I honestly have not put a tape measure on it, but I know the Tri axle Ifor is bang level behind the 90 and I have to drop the hitch 2 holes for the Indespension Tow a Van, the difference in the height in that picture is 60mm that's a lot the trailer would be running on its front axle. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Yes the balls were level when it was in "off road" and the bottom of the hitch plate was only 3" off the floor when in "access" If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I hate my farmers hitch tower, the number of tarmac trenches I have managed to dig are unbelievable. Anyone wanting to swap for a QR hitch? Whistle

Yes, but until you know the running height of the Ifor how do you know it conforms with EU standards. Defenders have many options for heights including sliding adjustables so that's no indication of conformity, only flexibility beyond what is standard.

USA boat trailers are well known for this as well, they run far too high for EU standards as anyone who owns a Mastercraft will tell you. I drilled an extra set of holes for this damn thing which I did on the car as I don't have a pillar drill.

Mine seems to work fine on the top setting for both Ifor Williams and MasterCraft Cool

Strangely there is one For Sale in the For Sale section, some one is interested already so you can have second dibbs if you want. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

You have an EU trailer there. Mine is on a US trailer with hydraulic brakes and the ride height is a lot higher. Gimme a sec and I'll dig out a pic.

Here, you can just make out the master cylinder on the hitch. That runs at almost 18 inches off the floor to the centre of the ball.

Mines a U.S. trailer - 2" ball, hydraulic brakes and no handbrake Thumbs Up

Yours actually looks like it was modified to sit higher - mine just runs straight from the horizontal trailer box section.

No, not modified but not box section either. It's all made of C section steel. As I imported it from the States about 15 years ago. All I've ever done is service the brakes.

And the FF set in standard ride height and caravan height set of holes on the hitch...........

Completely agree. Drilling two more holes further up sorts it though (there's a huge difference between towing a double axle trailer with a slightly too low hitch to a tri-axle). Mine was horrific on the motorway and very unstable even when loaded.

While you're at it get them to build up the farmer hitch with some weld and then machine it back so it is a snug fit in the holster. Once you've used the tow bar you'll notice you can move it up / down / sideway a few mm and it hammers something awful in the car. I built mine up and it's now very snug with zero movement after several thousand miles towing the tri-axle.

Two holes drilled further up and the bottom but off to neaten things up and now the tri-axle is a stable as it should be (even with 6 round bales of haylage aboard) Thumbs Up

Good luck!
