Engine replacement.

As said in the intro section a few days ago,
"Its a 2004 HSE, just done 120,000 miles. Paint work is in good condition with the odd scratch, colour is Giverny Green. The interior is Aspen/Ivory, but needs a very good clean.
It has been stood since 8 August 2012 when the engine gave up.
Has a blown engine, but I have a complete engine with all ancillaries in the back of the P38 out of a 2005 TD6 with less than 15,000 miles done.
That's my job in the next month or so, between a caravan holiday down Cornwall and various other jobs on the go"

Finally got it up on the lift today ready for engine removal this weekend.
Found a couple of bad oil leaks from the front crank pulley and from the gearbox bell housing. Could this be caused by excess crankcase pressure? I will strip the engine down at a later date to find out what gave up on it.
Going off the appearance of the motor, it looks like it has not had a proper service in the last four years or so.
One thing that I will have done (as there were no issues with the gearbox according to the previous owner), whilst the engine is out is have the torque converter reconditioned. As it's done the mileage where it wont be long before it munches on its lock up clutch, I think that this, plus a fluid and filter change is a good way to prolong the life of the gearbox.
What oil does the GM box use? After a good trawl around various sites, it would seem that a good dexron 3 is the correct oil.
Will be posting some pictures at a later date.

Steve.

Check the crankcase breather. Seems to get missed when servicing and blocks up and causes all sorts of issues.

BMW upgraded the item in later BMW cars and you can fit that and forget.

A must on your replacement engine.

Have a search for crankcase breather, or a thread I did a few years ago called BMW upgrades.....

Thumbs Up

Good luck with the project. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

This thread. I didn't know about the upgrade. I will do it to mine when the crankcase breather is due for replacement. Thanks. Thumbs Up

@ Vaz - good luck with the project. Looking forward to the updates. Thumbs Up

I think everyone with a td6 should upgrade the crankcase breather. Did mine within a week of buying it. Also if you fit an aftermarket air filter that you don't change for a while, the top doesn't have to come off the engine during a service, and my garage charge me less due to the reduced labour and part needs.......

Need to put something in the Wiki perhaps, as it's going to be little consolation for someone having to replace the turbo or even worse, due to the filter blocking....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Yes, it sounds a very good upgrade. Mine was changed 2 months ago so I won't do it right away.

When I do it, if it's not in the wiki I'll post something up. Thumbs Up

Well made a start around 3pm today and started stripping the front end down. Got the bumper off and other stuff then realised no pictures. Took this one about 1-1/2 hours into the job.

This was around an hour later, a totally different beast to working on a P38.

This was around 6pm.

Clear access to the engine and all the fiddly stuff at the front that you can't get to with the rad, etc, in place. Had to de-gas the aircon as I couldn't get to the compressor to leave the system pressurised. I have a pipe to remove though which goes to the bulkhead.
Stripped out the radiator, aircon condenser, fan assembly and pressure washed all the gunk and grime from each. Its amazing how much rubbish (leaves, bird feathers, straw and grass) gets trapped between the various parts. Back flushed the radiator with the pressure washer, came out pretty clean, considering the length of time the motor has been stood.
More pictures tomorrow when I should have the engine out.

Steve.

We've been playing this game recently. The car on the right - is it a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow?

Got the engine out, quite a heavy lump I would guess at around 250kg.

Leaves me thinking that I might have the torque converter reconditioned as a precaution.

The vehicle has done 120,000 miles. Although the previous owner told me there were no issues with the gearbox, it is getting to the mileage where it might not be too long before the torque converter gives up its innards.
As a side note I bought 20 litres of Texaco Texamatic 7045E today for the sum of £82.58 including delivery, that works out at £4.13 per litre. The local Land Rover dealer wanted £17.97 per litre after our trade discount. Something wrong there.

Steve.

Mr Verbose, the motor on the other ramp is a Silver Shadow. My boss is very respected for working on old Rolls and Jaguars.

Yes! Do the converter if it is just hanging there! Def!! And a fluid drain (flush is not really necessary as that is mainly for the converter). And you might think about swapping in a valbe body modified with Sonnax bits.

Thanks for that, will defiantly do the TC had a reasonable quote from JPat, collection, remanufactured and return carriage.
Anyone know a company in the UK who will recondition the valve body with Sonnax parts?

Steve.
