United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Java Black

Received the transmission oil today.
Opened it up to have a look and horrors, it is red in colour.
When I removed the torque converter from the gearbox (the oil cooler pipes at the weekend as well), the oil out of that/them is a natural colour or honey coloured, a bit black, but didn't smell burnt, but honey in colour.
Would this have had a oil change early in its life and someone put the wrong oil in the transmission, or was that the oil spec that Land Rover filled from new?

Steve.

Little tip for you Vaz, take the bonnet rams off and lift the bonnet upright and lock it with the locking sliders on the hinges (one each side) Thumbs Up

Saves you getting funny scars on yer noggin... Thumbs Up

Craig. Thanks for the tip regarding the bonnet. I already knew about that, the same setup on the P38.
Got the correct oil, but was concerned about the wrong oil. I haven't removed the gearbox sump yet. There was no trace of red in the old oil.
Looks like it will have to wait until we get back off our holiday at the end of August.

Carried on with the motor yesterday (can't believe it is nearly two months since I removed the old engine), got the motor on the lift Thursday afternoon.

New engine ready to be fitted.
Started it around 9:30am yesterday. Fitted a re-conditioned torque convertor to the gearbox.
By 1:00pm it was in and bolted up to the gearbox.

Finished off connecting all the various pipes, cables, etc. Before going home, I drained the transmission oil and removed the pan. Oil was blackish but didn't smell burnt, a small gathering of particles around the magnet, but nothing unusual or excessive.
Today I fitted a new Filtran filter to the gearbox, a new pan gasket and bolted the pan back.
Fitted the extension housing for the offside drive shaft, struggled to squeeze the front diff in through the space where the nearside drive shaft resides, then fitted the driveshafts.
Put 5 litres of transmission fluid in the gearbox for now (that is all I can get in until the car is started). filled the engine with oil and fitted a new oil filter. Then filled the radiator and engine with water (will fill with antifreeze after ensuring there are no water leaks.
After checking the fuel filter for diesel, I decided to start it on the existing diesel (2 year old diesel), it smelt fine, and after I had it running will fit a new fuel filter.

The next few steps are a bit of a puzzle.

Because the engine has been sat on a pallet since Feb 2007, I thought I would turn it over with the injectors disconnected from the ecu, this is to get the oil circulating around the engine before it is running (I made sure the engine turned over before fitting it). After a couple of minutes of cranking, I disconnected the battery and re-connected the injectors.
Connected the battery then started to crank the engine.
First point to note, the engine only cranks for around 5 seconds, then stops. If I switch off and crank again, it stops after 5 seconds, it will not crank for longer than this. Is this normal?

Second point. After failing to start, I checked the fuel, looks like it is very low in the tank, I thought to check the inline fuel pump to see if it is working or has packed up after not being used. Removed it from the mountings, removed the plug and tested it with a probe, the pump works, but sounded as though it was dragging air from the tank. Re-fitted the pump and went back to the fuel filter. Disconnected the fuel supply to the engine and attached our vacuum pump to the output from the fuel filter. Started the vacuum pump and it dragged around a pint of diesel through then air bubbles (probably emptied the fuel filter then dragging air from the tank), so it must be nearly dry in the tank.
Now I know on the P38 diesel the fuel pump runs when the ignition is cranking the engine over, on checking the inline fuel pump (in front of the nearside rear wheel), when the engine is cranking, the fuel pump doesn't run. Is this right or does the pump shut down when the tank runs low on diesel?

Third point. When I un-bagged the engine from the pallet, it came with the ecu that it had from new. I removed this and used the existing ecu for the motor. I don't think that this should matter, but brings me to the

Fourth point. Could it have lost its code and be immobilised? Would the ecu have something to do with this? The ecu is the original one for the motor, I haven't used the ecu that came with the new engine, for the reason it is vehicle specific. Code from the immobiliser chip in the key that I have matches what is in the existing ecu. I only have one key for the moment. The doors will not open with the buttons on the key fob, I have to unlock it with the key itself and the central locking doesn't work (not bothered about this at the moment unless the starting problems are linked), the button on the fob for the rear door works though.
Will mull over the various points until Monday morning, but open to suggestions.

Steve.

had a similar issue on my old p38, re immobiliser, did you lock the car with the ecu disconnected?. if so, it looses is synchronisation. (on p38) I needed to buy a 'blackbox' to plug in and it re-synched itself.
reason, the key and ecu shake hands every key press. I took ecu out to tinker, and locked the car, replaced ecu, and no key click, nothing. could a similar series of events happened?
by now hopefully land rover have adopted a similar 'repair' to other makes, where-as you get in car, lockit with key in ignition and unlock -or something similar. or maybe even key in door lock, and press button and twist key? someone will have done this already.
nice job so far!

Well got the engine running today, after a couple of days chasing none existent faults. I think when something doesn't do what you think it should, you are tempted to have a probe about and this then gets too deep.
Out of three diagnostic kits what we have, none managed to solve the final two problems.
BCU was somehow set in transportation mode. The Bosch KTS570 saw this fault, but would not clear it. Apart from other niggling faults (not severe enough to stop it running), that was the major fault.
The other diagnostic kit (Omitec) which was made by the same company who made the T4 stuff, found an immobiliser fault. This could be re-synced (or that's what it said on the screen), but no joy with that. It would not clear the transportation mode either.
This turned out to be that the motor had lost the link between the BCU (I think) and the engine ecu regarding the immobiliser code, so it was locked out from starting (cut off to the injectors). Along with low pressure to the fuel rail and the starter motor packing up (the engine had been stood on a pallet since Feb 2007).
I swapped the starter motor with the one from the blown engine and we got an engine crank once again, but low fuel rail pressure.
After speaking to a local diesel injection specialist, he told me to check the none return piston in the high pressure fuel pump as they sometimes stick if stood for a while. Sure enough it took a fairly strong prod with some welding wire to get it moving. Replaced fuel supply line , cranked engine and sure enough, high pressure to fuel rail, but not starting.
Called on another local shop who have the Autologic unit. This afternoon they called up. First job to clear the transportation mode, cleared straight away. Interior lights came on, central locking worked from the fob, so that was a start.
Couldn't find any way of syncing the immobiliser code, so he decided to re-program the engine ecu. this took around 10 minutes. Finally after a minute or so of cranking and a small quantity of easy start, the engine sprang into life, but missing on No 2 cylinder. I let it idle for around 5 minutes to get warm,, then switched off. came back to it 2 hours later, started up and it now runs fine.
Just the front end to put back together this weekend, then it's home for a interior strip out to have a good clean. Next month it should be on the road where it belongs, instead of being parked up for the last couple of years.

Steve.

Top job mate, bet that was a relief when it started....

When you take the seats out I found it easier to take the rear seats out through the tailgate, they will fit through the door but it's tight and the double seat is rather heavy.... Pete
I now have permission from the boss to use Y.O.L.O. Enjoy life

Thanks for all the comments much appreciated.
It was a relief, when it finally started. took nearly a week to get it running.
Never gave it a thought about taking the rear seats out of the tailgate. I removed the rears on another P38 some years ago, got the double through one of the back doors but very awkward.
It is Giverny Green. Like the colour, we thought it was a metallic grey colour when we first saw the pictures, depends on how the light catches it. The interior is Aspen with Ivory seats, etc. Makes the inside light and airy, but will need some seat covers later to keep the leather clean.
Fault code reader needed at a later date, I have one now for the P38 a Faultmate MSV2, but for all the modules, single vehicle use only it is nearly £700. I do like to have diagnostics that are not locked to one vehicle, as if someone locally needs something looking at, it will work with their motor also.
Toying between the IID or RSW all comms.

Steve.
