My 06MY '05 Vogue has a very annoying whining noise when the air-con is going.

It's worse at low revs, seems to vary with the engine speed, and comes and goes at higher speeds/revs/loads.

Press the air con snowflake button to switch off and fan continues but noise disappears, so defo air. Con..

It seems to be cold enough and no hissing.

Thought it might be the belt due to varying pitch with engine, but I'm sure it comes from the dash.

Anyone any ideas???

Only picked car up the other day. I was prepared for some glitches and expense with a RR but was hoping for a little go without problems!!!??

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts before I hand my wallet over to the dealers!!?

Its the compressor, had the same on my old one, initially thought it was viscous fan as it was rev related but went away with AC off...had it done under warranty so no idea of cost unfortunately,,. '08 Audi S6 Avant 5.2 V10 with Milltek non-resonated. Vrrrrrrmmmmmph

As I've just picked it up I have got a warranty - but not a main dealer unfortunately, so will be a good time to test the warranty!!?

The compressor will whine when the gas gets low , compressors aren't that expensive but a re-gas is even cheeper but if you can get a new compressor out of the warrantee that might be better and possibly cure the micro leak ( if you have one ) 2008 MY Supercharged

Cheers axle - Sounds like I might as well try a re-gas first. £50 is better than a potential £500 !!!

It's definitely not ice-cold as it should be so I'll try the gas and maybe they can check over the system while they're at it.

From memory they have to pressure test the system as part of the regas so if there is a leak it will show up

Unfortunately not all regassers check for a leak. Best to specify that a leak check should be done. John

Looks like my main local options for a re-gas / leak check are Kwik-Fit or ATS. Has anyone had any experience of them (as i still think of them as just a bunch of spotty tyre-fitters - sorry!!??) or would I be better off getting a recommended mobile chappy??

Mine whines as well, I assumed it was bearings, haven't done anything about changing it so far. I could try a gas-up and see I guess.

OP, the vast majority of aftermarket warranties will only cover FAILED items, and they will say to you "is it still working?" and because the answer is yes, they won't cover it unless it fails completely. Mad, but that's how they work. I have tried this myself (with a different item) where I pointed out that a part was definitely on the way out and if left, it would take other things with it when it failed completely, but they didn't want to know. Vast majority of 3rd party warranties are simply an excuse to open your wallet, dip in, and f* off never to be seen again. I haven't purchased one for a very very long time.

Of course there will always be someone who was given a brand new L405 by their warranty company when their £750 P38 developed a minor fault, but in general if you Google car warranty tales you will find my original version to be far closer to the norm.

Mine has a small leak, always whines when low, stops when regassed.
