Chaps. Great advice about the jack. Whilst setting up a bike rack I flattened the battery with all doors open and lights on and off. I got the battery back with my optimate. but think I might need a v8 capable booster pack. Any recommendations?

This one does the job on my 3.6 TDV8 on a cold morning...weighs a bit but hay'ho

Only if you haven't left it plugged into the car to charge when you're in the process of flattening the battery...

Yep, that maplin one worked for me when my last battery was on its way out...

Just get a long fat set of jump leads, they will suffice in most situations...... And you don't have to remember to charge them. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I go along with northernmonkeyjones on this one. Jump leads are an essential.

Booster packs are good if you use and recharge them on a regular basis. Thet are not good at sitting around unused for any length of time and most have no overcharge protection built in (that is assuming you remember to charge them).

I also subscribe to a fair amount of paranoia, and never ever work on the car with doors open unless it is also connected to a charger.

If your working underneath you should leave a door open, it will stop the suspension deciding to self level... Pete

I would advise never to work under the vehicle without axle stands. My opinion.

For something truly portable and with many uses besides jump starting, try an Anti-Gravity Battery.

I'm perfectly serious. These things work! I bought one thinking 'yeah, yeah...' but it jump-started my 3.0 diesel Mercedes motorhome from dead flat with ease.

I've started getting interesting in RC stuff - mainly multirotors.
these use LiPo's, as in the antigravity, and there are routine accounts of people using their RC lipo's to jump start trucks on RC forums. even a small battery for a DJI phantom can push out 95amps and peak at nearly 190.
they are serious bits of kit that need to be treated correctly. if you short one it will melt metal...don't ask how I know
