Now on a more serious matter, what about some preventive maintenance like the gearbox and engine oil heat exchanger replacements. On my 4.2 both failed within a month of each other. Granted the bloody idiots that put pure water into the cooling system hadn't improved the situation as the early coolers/heat exchangers were prone to corrosion related failure.

Also the rear calipers are a weak point.

And if you are getting shift issues, the EDS 3 solenoid is a likely candidate for replacement Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I'm going to get it home and get it in the workshop and give it a going over to make sure there's nothing obvious and nothing leaking.

I'm then going to change the gearbox, transfer box and differential oils. There's a LR receipt for an engine oil service just a couple of months ago so that should be ok.

What happened when yours went Eugene? Did you find oil in the water?

Hi David,

Both of them failed quite badly actually. The gearbox one resulted in a mix of ATF and coolant and a cooling system with a large percentage of ATF in it. Took forever to clean out both.

The engine oil was unaffected (changed it anyway), not even a trace of coolant but the cooling systems took days of refills/detergent to clean before the mechanics had it clean enough to fill with coolant (proper coolant this time) and even then I still had some crap coming out into the expansion tank from time to time for a while. So lot of cleaning work of that.

On the gearbox I noticed it wasn't quite right but unfortunately I was already having the 3-4 shift issue so I thought it was related to that until I saw the massive load of sludge coming out of the coolant expansion tank !!! Glad I checked that because otherwise the gearbox would have gone as well.

The engine we only found out because the coolant tank kept getting sludge in, initially I thought it was just old crap from the gearbox because the engine oil was clean (and remained so all the time).

Anyway, once the cooler was replaced it still took a very long time to clean the cooling system but in the end all was well. The coolers were 183 Euro from my main dealer in Rotterdam, just a design flaw on the early ones and typical for the ZF box, not just the FFRR. I actually found out about the problem on an Aussie forum on Fords with the same box !! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yikes!

Certainly something I'd rather avoid then deal with after it's happened!

I'll get a proper look through the receipts when I get it as there's a folder full of them. Should provide some both interesting and scary reading at the same time!

Well the train tickets are booked to pick it up Smile

Leave Glasgow at 16:00 tomorrow, change trains at Edinburgh where my other half is meeting me and we depart Edinburgh at 17:00, hopefully arriving in Newcastle at 18:30.

Will collect the car and visit my sister who lives in Jesmond for a quick cuppa before heading back up the A69 heading for home Smile

Can't wait now! Mr. Green

Have already got a few jobs lined up for Tuesday...

Change the tyres from the General Grabbers to the Pirelli Scorpion Zero's.
Full service including diff oils, transfer box and transmission oil. I might leave the engine oil as it was only changed 2000 miles ago but will see how I go for time.
Fit a new set of carpet mats

And if time permits, give it a wash and polish. Might even try and get some pictures of it beside the AB.

Well the SC has landed.

Couple of little issues to deal with but nothing major I don't think.

The guy I bought it from went to fill it with petrol for me yesterday and said that the pin was showing half a tank yet it took £130 to fill so he's advised me to keep and eye on it as it's not done that to him before.

I started it when dad was having a look round it tonight and when the auto lights came on the indicators in the rear light clusters flickered a couple of times and settled down. I assume this is something to do with the wiring to the newer rear lights. There appears to be some additional wiring in the back for them.

The dashboard displays a "Check Brake Pad" message when you start the car. The pads and discs look new and this is confirmed by a recent main dealer receipt in the folder less then 2000 miles ago so I'm guessing that there's a wear sensor that's been damaged somewhere. I'll get this fixed tomorrow too.

The General Grabber tyres are indeed 275 section and make a roar when you're on the road so they are coming off tomorrow morning and are being swapped for Pirelli Scorpion Zero's. I think I'm going to order a new set as the ones I got with the car aren't that good but they'll do for now.

I got onto the A69 and stuck the cruise control on at 70mph all of the way with the occasional squeeze on the loud pedal to overtake lorries and sat at a steady 70 all of the way up the M6/M74 as well and averaged 20.0mpg which I didn't think was bad as the air con was on all the time at 17. I wonder if it might go up slightly when the tyres are changed to normal road tyres.

Am really pleased with the car though. The interior is absolutely spotless. Everything electrical works and does exactly as it should. The 3.5mm aux in socket in the back is great to connect your phone to as it doesn't have the proper iPod kit unfortunately.

I'm going to get Wiggs to update the bluetooth module as according to his website this is one of the modules that he can reprogram.

Anyway, tomorrow should see all of the niggles sorted. Need to make sure I've got weights to balance the wheels after I've changed the tyres. Having a tyre machine has proven to be very handy recently!

As there was nothing much on the cards for today I decided I'd spend the day cleaning the SC.

Started with a treatment of Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner on the exhausts which made little to no difference so I used the AutoSol Solvol that Bellini had recommended. The results were great Smile

Went from this...

To this (left is during, right is buffed obviously!)

And finished..

Pictures are of opposite exhausts as I forgot to take a before of the nearside tip before I started.

After I'd done that I washed the whole car and took some pictures of it.

There's a couple of chips on both front door handles where it looks like they've been caught by a ring on someones hands. There's also a little mark above the offside rear door that I'll get sorted as well.

Other then that though the car is great. There's not a knock or rattle from it, and when you prod the loud pedal it goes like stink.

Have ordered diff oil, supercharger oil and a few other bits and pieces for it. I changed the rear brake pads on Friday evening and replaced all the wheel nuts with new shiny ones supplied by Dan so it's getting there now.

Keeping an eye on 5.0 prices now too as that's certainly going to be what replaces this one Very Happy

It's in a village called Langbank, Eugene. About 18 miles west of Glasgow, in the middle of the land owned by my folks Smile
