Fuel Gauge reading

We have a 2003 L322 V8 petrol. The fuel gauge never reads higher than 3/4 full even though when it is refuelled to the point at which the fuel nozzle starts to click off.

Last year the dealers had to replace the fuel pump. Could the sender be damaged or need recalibrating? I would have thought the dealers would have reset everything though.

The arm could have been bent i suppose, if it works the same way as the tdv8 there are 2 sender units one in each half of the tank, and the dash cluster takes an average read from them, could be one is daged broken and its not able to compute the correct level. If its not the senders then it is probably a problem in the cluster.

Does it sit on 3/4 for a while as you use up fuel? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As has been said, like most BMW's of the era, the tank has twin senders due to split nature of the tank. If one is dodgy it won't get to the full mark. If it was OK before the dealer did the fuel pump it's likely the sender on that side hasn't been set up correctly, I had a similar issue but on a different BMW.

Another possibility of an incorrect reading is if someone has been fiddling with the dash.
Where does the needle on the gauge sit when the ignition is off?
If it's hitting the binnacle then the needle of the gauge needs twisting around a bit.
If someone has fixed a dash with missing pixels it's possible the gauge needle hasn't been put back right, I speak from experience Wink

Thanks for the replies. From what has been said it sounds like it could be one of the senders faulty. The dash hasn't been touched and it does lie on 0 when its off.

We tend to use the range on the display and try to not let it drop below 1/4 full!

mine is the same after replacing the in tank fuel pump ,have you sorted it yet?? if so what was it ?/ have hawkeye diagnostics for l322 td6 in the manchester area ,pm for deatalis.

Mines the same. It also runs out of fuel at around 70 miles left so I think I have a dodgy sender
