It looks like there is still some of the metal exposed with door open?
I guess with the door shut the door rubber seal butts up to the plastic strip nice and close?

Top one. I assume with door shut the 2 seals join nicely up against each other?

I now see what you mean.
The original LR cover strips covered about the same amount of the metalwork if not slightly less.
The door seals overlap as far as I am aware but will have to look in daylight.

LR strips cover all the lip....

Sorry I just can't get a picture that clearly shows contrast between the outer door seal and the cover strip applied to the wheel arch return. Suffice to say the outer door seal does indeed overlap the cover strip and effectively fully protects the rear arch return. Without the cover strip or the LR genuine part the rear arch is definitely susceptible to impact and potential corrosion. Applying either strip over a liberal coating of grease and cleaning yearly should stop the corrosion.

Nicedayforit does your rubber run front right through to the rear?
If so how do you deal with the kink at around 12o'clock position?

No the trim doesn't go round the kink.
I have two pieces fitted to each side split at the 12 o'clock position. They are fitted as close to the kink as I can get.
I rely on a coating of grease to cover the kink, seems to work, after 15 years still no corrosion to the rear arches.

Order placed for 2 of nicedayforits recommended rubber strips from eBay to replace the existing LR strips in arch and add to front of each arch
Got a nice pot of bearing grease already

All done today
Removed old strips and cleaned out the crap from behind and left overnight to dry.
Lots of grease applied and new LR strips (LR001623) cut to size and fitted nicely to the trailing edges. 1 for each side cut to fit. £19 for both from Duckworths.
Also fitted the eBay sourced plastic trims to the leading edge of the lip where none existed before
