Transfer box leak?

Just been under the bus today (57 plate tdv8) and noticed that the transfer box looked shiny and wet (no it wasn't raining) there was a thin film of oil on it and a small drop on the bottom bolts. Looked round the seals and couldn't see where it was coming out. Looked like it was coming all the way from the top of the transfer box. Could it be breather related?

There was a slight trail of oil from top but only a thin film. As its under warranty I might pop it to the dealer and see how much fluid they can fit in. If it takes a lot then it's likely to have been leaking for a while. If it takes a little then probably breather and nothing to worry. Whaddya think guys.

Are the tfr boxes supposed to be tough or are they a bit of a weak point?
Any help? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine leaked through an oil seal and was fixed under warranty. It's a big job as the gearbox needed to be removed, so be glad you have a warranty to pick up the bill.

Apparently it is more than 4 hours labour as the Landrover warranty needed to have one of their engineers inspect and approve before they could do the job under warranty

Ringing Dealer today.

Wouldn't have expected a seal failure at 4 years old.

Should have been picked up by supplying dealer before it was sold. Another case of them leaving something so warranty would sort it and not leave them with the bill I think. Not supplied by my local dealer in derby so it's going to them for the work.

Might get them to check out the transmission, it has that ever so slight jerk between 1st an 2nd as well, but only under part/light throttle. Might need a software reflash. But I'm being quite picky, it's so slight that most people wouldn't notice it. I'm just a bit fussy like that. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Aparently it was leaking from the case seal, not either of the input/output seals.

Box out, more silicone based sealant, box back in.

No bother, warranty approve the repair and should have it back tomorrow. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Interesting.....mine had same leak as mentioned in this thread, they first said it was oil spill from when service done but when picked it up they said it was oil seal which they'd replaced. However, it was only an hour or so between the first call and picking it up, I just presumed it was a five min jobby.

Low and behold, I noticed a couple of weeks ago it was "wet" with oil again. I'm gearing up for a massive kick off session with Censored newcastle when I'm there in the morning!!!

Waiting to see what they have actually done. Had a good look round the box before it went in and should be able to tell of its been out or not.

I would think that it would need taking out to reseal the casing, well actually it would be stupid to try it on the car as any oil on the case would prevent the sealant working.

Impressed with LR derby so far. Good comms and got it in quick. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

have got it back.

Hoovered out, washed, and hopefully fixed. FOC to me but saw the bill to the warranty, close on £500 which is pretty much all labour as there were no parts involved bar a bit of silicone.

Looks like the box came out. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
