^ not sure why they would have to break a window if they had a programmed key? But yes, I saw a programme about bmw's being stolen using the method you described.... Scumbags. Previously..

11 plate would not have a (key type) key?? Breaking the window would not open the door either? |

There's something not quite right about the story.

Just after I bought my M3 in 2011 there was a series of M3's, 1M's and X5's being stolen whereby the thief would smash a front window of securely parked car allowing them access the vehicles OBD port. This action did not activate the vehicles alarm as the intrusion into the vehicle was kept within a few inches of the door card. The thief would then program a new key and the vehicle could then be accessed and driven away. It took BMW quite a while before they brought a security update out.

It would take some doing to smash any window and not set off the alarm??? |

Well it didn't (doesn't?) due to a security oversight. I suppose as long as the action isn't enough to set the motion sensor off then then the alarm/immobiliser won't activate. Then with the system not monitoring six or so inches from the door panel the alarm would still not be activated when reaching in to access the OBD. Once this is accessed the alarm is/was? pretty much useless. Loads of discussions on BMW forums and PH about it. One guy even posted his CCTV footage when his 1M was stolen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLHo-GYG25Q 2024 P550e Autobiography 2016MY TDV6 Autobiography - Gone 2011MY 5.0 SC Autobiography Black - Gone 2005 TD6 Vogue - Gone |

Wow - thats scary. This is a subject close to my heart - My mate had his M3 stolen from underneath his bedroom window without so much as a peep. Police said they must have had a key - big suspicious as he had just had it serviced a couple of days before and his tracker did not go off. It was never recovered |

I know, especially when blockers/jammers can be bought so cheaply, do you go for a VHF, GPS or GSM based tracker? each one have their drawbacks and can be blocked.

The program I watched the Police showed a lot of the cars that had been stolen & cloned & it did include a few RRs as well as BMWs etc. given the fact our cars have a large amount of BMW parts to me it stands to reason they probably suffer from the same weakness in the anti theft systems. Only a thought though! Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!! |

Yes you'd think so but the insurer was an offshore based call centre. It took 9 months proving it. Utter take. |
