Fuel pump noise

Sorry for the dumb question but my car a 03 4.4 petrol, the engine turns over but won't fire up.

I swapped the relays out in the rear fusebox to no avail then I stripped the back floor out to try to listen to the fuel pump, it is silent, should I be able to hear anything?

Any ideas or further tests I can do before I resort to following Saint V8's excellent post on how to replace my fuel pump. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

John [47p2] has suggested knocking the pump with a screwdriver to see if its jammed.... ... - .- -.

You don't need to knock 7 bells out of it, just a few light taps with a screwdriver or spanner Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, I have tried that but didn't hold much hope cos the pump is deep inside the fuel tank or am I missing something? Is there a secondary pump on the petrol also? 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

Cheers Stevey, I had read that but I think it is only the diesel that has the external secondary pump.

Can anyone confirm yes or no please? 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

Looking at Rave the petrol engine only has one pump from what I can see. Still worth giving it a sharp chap with a hard object to see if it kicks into action

Had this problem 2 years ago and the lads are correct, the v8 only has one pump and is on the righthand side.Lift the seats and you can actually thump it with your fist and that will free it if its sticking. It will run for a little bit and then stop again most likely.Saint v8's write up is all you'll need and another bit of advice is to change the fuel filter if your changing the pump aswell.

As a matter of interest how many miles are on your Rangie, the pump seems to fail around the 100k mark

Thanks for the replies guys, thumps and whacks didn't work so I will be stripping it down.

I really would still like to know if I should be hearing the pump or not before I start to pull it apart, it is currently silent when I think I should be hearing something buzzing with the ignition on.

Rathbran I am at exactly 125k miles. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

if the pump is working you should have heard a noise from it when you listened to it.The second option is to do a pressure test which can be found in the :

Wiki>online workshop manual>Range Rover L322 Workshop Manual - Service Procedures>fuel delivery system v8>fuel system pressure test.

this will at least make sure your on the right track having done all the electrical guesswork, but me thinks you are at the mileage thats on her Daz Thumbs Up

All done

Well thanks for all the help and advice guys.

I swapped the old fuel pump for a new one from Eurocarparts (£155 all in after 25% discount) I followed Saint V8's brilliant instructions and everything went to plan.

She fired up straight away.

Thanks again everyone, I saved a small fortune. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

Very very helpful thanks Saint.

For what it's worth my fuel pump was totally knackered, no warning it just stopped working, when I put a current onto it it was dead. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie
