Hi,

Do pin 32 and pin 36 BOTH have to be connected to the ULF while shorting? Or is it just pin 32 that stays in?

Pin 36 is the permanent earth for the ULF. It will not power up without it connected. It needs to be connected at all times.

Pin 32 just needs to touch to the 36 wire as part of the pairing procedure.

So I put a choccy block in the wire going to pin 36, just the same wire 36 in, and 36 out, just cut and reconnected with the choccy block. This allowed me to poke the wire from pin 32 into the choccy block end have it connected to the wire in 36, manually, as to do the pairing procedure. Hence 32 and 36 are still connected to the ULF.

To make sure the wire from pin 32 didn't touch anything when not in use, I put a choccy block on that too, but nothing in the other end.

Hope that makes sense.

If the ULF is powered properly, you should have "Telephone" in white on the screen in the car, with or without a phone paired........

If you have a look on my other threads about ULF's, you'll see I later changed my system to have a pairing switch in the boot, negating the need to move wires about.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've now got it paired but the Mic isn't working. I had assumed it was prewired but now I'm not so sure. Does the pic of the back of the Mic below look correct?

No, that's an Alpine after market microphone from a previous phone kit I'd imagine.

Looks like it's in the proper holder though.

There was very little slack on my mic wire in the headlining, and I struggled to connect the BMW microphone.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure they only have 2 or 3 connections, so if you connect correctly it could still work. You'll have to check the wiring though.

Can you see the wire in the headlining that comes from the ulf ?

Can you see the end of the wire that you do have ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Yes there was an old Nokia cradle in the car when I bought it, although that seemed to have a separate Mic wired in which was stuck on the roof.

The wiring to the alpine Mic seemed to go into a big bundle of wires which looked pretty original. Could it be some kind of sensor for the in car entertainment, rather than a Mic? The tv's are alpine...

How would I go about checking in the headlining?

It could be. Do you have wireless headphones or something ?

If you have extra Alpine kit in the car, poss best to leave the connection as is until you know more - don't want to stuff something that's there.

I'd imagine the original mic wires should still be there somewhere.......

I'm remembering 3 wires now......going to the mic......

You could try disconnecting the mic and seeing what no longer works......... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Yes, there's wireless headphones although I've never got them working.

If the car is prewired for a Mic (which I expect it is - it has the phone controls on the steering wheel) where would I find it?

There is a second Mic that's still attached which was put in for the Nokia cradle. Unfortunately, I can't work out where the wiring for that goes...

My mic connector was tucked up near where the mic would be, but there was no mic in the car, I got a BMW one. The black holder was there though, which your alpine mic is in.

There was little slack on the wire, it was almost too short to reach, so it may be behind the interior light or sunroof switch etc.

What I can't remember is whether the connection goes to the eject box near the armrest first. Don't think it does.

I'll power on my pc and check the wiring diagrams.....

Hold fire....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

The diagram below is from RAVE. Please remember the connector pin numbers are the OLD ones, ie where you took the wire from, not how you have got it now. The big black connector in the boot was originally wired to go to a Telephone Control Module, which you don't have.

So I remembered right, there a 3 connections to the mic. the mic is powered as it uses noise cancelling.

The far right (C0947) is the big black connector in your car ;

From the top, pins 53,54 and 52, should be your pins 19, 1 and 21, though the mic works with them as 21, 1 and 19, just to confuse matters plus it looks like 54 is not used !

So you should have a connector in the headlining with 3 wires coloured yellow, black and a shield earth.

These will be a different colour to the wires in the boot, as they go through another connector, C2044. Not sure where that is............ 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Thanks very much for that - I'll take out the overhead console and see if the Mic connector is in there.

Thanks very much - after some rummaging, I managed to find it tucked away out of sight. Now to buy a microphone! I've made enquiries with BMW, and the cost of the updated microphone is about £42 (in case that's of use to anyone else).

Excellent.

There is a used one on the bay a bit cheaper if it's any use ;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E46-E38-E39-...461e71c203

You may need to hack the alpine microphone out of the mounting as it looks glued in.

Could be easier to just get a new cover as well, as the microphone clips into some lugs. Yours could be modded for the other mic.

You will be able to do it with glue or a heat glue gun though.

Make sure the arrow on the mic points to the front on the car when you mount it. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Thanks - car is currently being converted to LPG and don't get it back until Thursday, so will have to wait until then to fit the new mic. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement microphone grill? I think getting the old one out will be difficult as there's a lot of glue in there. Unless anyone has any nifty tricks?!
