Saudi Arabia 2004 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Bournville
Alternator 240 AMP

Hi guys

my car is RR 2004 HSE and i am facing these a battery drain issue.

i can not leave the car 3 continues days without using it , otherwise it will not start.

i took the car to a Maintenance center here specialized in BMW and RR 2003/2004 to check and solve the problem.

after checking the car the told me everything is OK except the alternator as its not working as it should be.

according to them the alternator voltage while the engine is running must be between 13.5v to 14.5v when the voltage of my car's alternator is only 12.8 maximum and because of that battery would not be fully charged.

today i have tested that by taking the car for a trip for an hour and and get the next figures

Engine Running , Voltage 12.5 to 12.8 V ( A/C+ Headlight) ON
Engine off voltage 11.9 V ( A/C+ Headlight) OFF

the other point is:

as i know the AMP of the car factory alternator is 150 AMP , so what about replacing it with 240 HIGH AMP ALTERNATOR as this one on the next link.

is the 240 AMP is it going to harm my car electronic devices ?

according to the item description it would not

Your maintenance centre is correct, if you alternator only gives a peak voltage of 12.8V your battery will not fully charge, indeed you will be lucky if it achieves much more than 50% charge.
A standard replacement alternator will charge your battery satisfactorily but if for any reason you run a lot of electrical equipment on a regular basis there is no reason why you should not fit the larger output alternator.
The larger alternator will not cause any damage.
The alternator will simply vary its output relative to the load being applied to it.

Just to put another voice to ^^^^^

Fitting the larger alternator will cause no damage and give the system space capacity. If your alternator is only putting out less than 13v then its on its way to broken.

Bear in mind if you have flattened the battery many times it
May have been damaged as car batteries do not like being deep cycled. See how it goes but bear in mind that it may need replacing as well.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
