Gearbox Software Update Hard shift

I have had a niggle with my 2006 S/C since I have had it.
On occasion if in traffic or when slowing don to a stop the gearbox makes a hard shift from 2nd to 1st.
Kind of like it didnt know which gear to be in at exactly the right moment.
I have read about others on hear havinh a similar problem, my question is, Do i have to got to a dealer to have the software upgrade or does anyone out there know anyone who can do it?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
regards
Alex

Hi Alex, I am in the middle of trying to solve this issue and I know there is another member that has a shift issue as well. My problem is the 3-4 shift and it is the same as what you mention, like the gearbox does not know to change gear or not.

According to a friend who knows a lot about JLR products, the gearbox and engine management talk to each other and if the EMS tells the gearbox one thing but the actual output of the engine is not quite there yet, that can translate into gear change issues.

Following discussions with various people and looking around the internet, I have found several potential issues and I am working through them.
- Change the oil and filter (depending on how many miles you car has done) may help
- Giving the fuel system and ignition system a good once over (fuel injector cleaner or premium petrol to clean fuel system and change plugs) and check everything.
- MAF issues
- other fuel system related issues (air leaks after the MAF)

I just collected a number of parts today to take back home as part of the problem solving exercise. In my case there is a strong suspicion that the fuel system is very dirty and maybe the inlet gaskets are gone/leaking. The tank and injectors have been cleaned this week and i have a new pump filter unit in my suitcase, plus new gaskets for the inlet manifold. A new MAF will also be installed.

The above are attempts on resolving the issues as we are not sure what is causing the problem.

As for reflashing the ECU, I am also considering that but since I notice that the pickup of the engine on the throttle is not as it should be, I want to first address all the fuel system issues before reflashing. I will have to reflash it myself with the Faultmate but I would suggest to go to the dealer if you can (I can't trust dealers in Nigeria, they have a very bad reputation) to do that. It is not guaranteed that that resolves the hard shift. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Alex, had my 06 SC reflashed at Guy Salmon LR in Aylesford. Phil Watson the service manager who I have known for about 10 years is most helpful. The reflash cured the 2nd to 1st downchange joit, which i think is called rollout.

Hi Stewart thanks for your reply.
How much did he charge you for the reflash?
Also was the reflash updated software or just resetting the adaptions?
Thanks for your time

I too have had this problem with my 2005 s/c. It has done 145k and last year I had:
1. Gearbox oil and filter replaced to deal with hard shift between 1st and 2nd
2. Fuel pumps replaced to deal with running out of petrol when quarter full

Spark plugs were replaced at 112k as part of the scheduled service.

All these have been beneficial, but the oil and filter change resulted in a radical improvement in the hard shift problem. However, I have noticed that it does still happen occasionally and will try the software upgrade, depending on the cost.

Alex, I had some other work done so I don't know the cost of the reflash. Perhaps give Phil a call and ask him how much just for a reflash. How many miles do you have on the clock, mine had 51k when reflashed.

Stewart.

I have got 76000 miles on the clock
I called phil and he is away for a week, his replacement quoted £99 + vat for the reflash. Not too awful!
Then if I wanted a filter & flush would be a total of £645!
£526.20 for a filter and flush? I am going to price up the filter and oil and do that myself i think!
Does anyone know if it is flashed with UPGRADED SOFTWARE or is it just having the adaptions reset to basic setting?

http://www.lrparts.net/pp/RANGE_ROVER_L322...H_OIL.html

This is a filter kit complete with 7 liter of oil. For a flush you need a lot more oil as the gearbox holds a lot more but when you just change the filter only 7 liter comes out. Note that the oil is ridiculously expensive if bought by the liter in most places, around 30 Euro !!! So if you want extra, see if you can get it somewhere else.

I am going for a second oil change after doing the filter plus 7 liter change out. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

A gearbox flash resets the adaptions as it wipes the ECU's memory.

I have just had the software updated on my 08my tdv8, the shifts from 1-2 and 2-1 are slightly smoother now than they were before.

Hunters in derby charged me £45 for the update which seems ok ish for 20 mins with a laptop but at least im assured of the very latest update.

worth the small outlay to cure the harsh shift i had. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have got access to a autoboss v30 to have the adaptions reset however I was under the impression that there is actually upgraded software that the dealer can install!
Is this correct?

Yes, it is a software update not just a reset. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
