Brake caliper sticking

Driving to work had a funny sound and feel in the steering wheel. Think it turned out to be a sticking passenger side caliper. After a few lit brakes at motorway speed the noise died off. I have drilled and slotted disks so that helped diagnose, plus the wheel was notably hotter than the drivers side.
Now how easy is it to bleed the system? Can the hose be clamped easy enough? I'm toying with overhauling mine myself but just found a replacement recon unit for £50 so not sure it's worth it. If minimal fluid is lost I guess it's easy enough to do if it can be clamped. How hard is it to bleed the whole system, if I went for a fluid change?
Thanks

The pistons rust and cause them to stick, if you can buy refurbished calipers for £50 then best change them

Yer they say they change pistons and seals, and have a 2 year warrenty. I can't remember but how many pistons are in the front calipers? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

It might be worth having a look to see if you could free it. A few times with various calipers I have taken the gator off the piston, used a fine wet and dry paper to polish off rust, lube with brake fluid and push it back in with a clamp. It's worth a try. If it works, get loads of copper grease around the back of the pads. Previously..

I've just done the rear drivers side one on mine.
I tried bleeding it, pushing the piston in & out a few times, making sure the guide pins were free and when all that failed to sort it I found a second hand one on Ebay for £25.
When I fitted it, I clamped the flexy hose and hardly lost anything.

One thing I did find though, I removed the rear disc to check the hand brake and found a pile of dust, rust & mud inside the disc. This was all cleaned out and hand brake & disc given a good dose with brake cleaner.
After seeing the state of that side I also removed and cleaned the passenger side disc and all has been well since. Mr. Green

I had the notorious rear caliper failure on the S/C and changed out both. 70 Euro each (exchange) for new calipers and not a problems since. Not sure about your car, mine has the Brembo front calipers.

My suggestion, look at price new compared to refurbishment kit (gaitor, seals and Ate grease). A refurb is usually not that much work (used to do them a lot as I used to drive crappy old cars), getting the pistons out is the hardest bit (easiest is using compressed air but be very careful, it is dangerous, I always had the caliper in a vice or a clamp so the piston couldn't "shoot" out).

The easiest is replacing the caliper for a new one and that would be my preferred option. Just get a brand new unit in as the old pistons could have been pitted and need replacing anyway. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I've refurbed calipers before on other projects and whilst its not that hard to do (assuming the pistons are not properly seized) the cost savings are not that great usually.

Factor in that a properly refurbed caliper will have been plated to look like new and more importantly pressure tested and its usually barely worth it.

BTW, if your discs are badly worn and pads very low, you can often find with new discs and pads, the piston is pushed back to a point past where it sticks and the caliper works fine again. Worth checking. Smile Lloyd Barnes

If new or refurbished calipers are not expensive then I see no point in trying to fanny them up with new seals, after all your life depends on them

When I had this problem with the driver's side rear, I replaced calipers and discs on both sides. I can't remember exactly what it cost, but Dan (Duckworths) supplied, at a very reasonable price. Very Happy
After all when you need to stop 2 1/2 tonnes in a hurry you can't afford to wonder whether your brakes will work. Thumbs Up

Well I won't be overhauling them myself as the saving isn't worth the hassle. Does anyone know if the double piston ones will fit the single piston system? If there a straight swap I think I will go down this route. There has to be some benefit to a single piston system. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]
