Exhuast Gas Recycling Valve TDV8

Following the appearance of an amber engine warning light and a trip to see FFRR member Piecost who very kindly used his Hawkeye box of tricks to tell me it related to the Exhaust Gas Recycling Valves. I took a futher trip to my local mechanic who confirmed the diagnosis and informed me that there are two EGRV'S and they cost £129 plus VAT plus fitting. He also said that the problem probably relates to carbon buid up and that a careful cleaning with suitable brushes and carb cleaner would do the trick negating the new EGRV'S.
What do you guys think?
I notice that you can buy a blanking kit that allows the the removal of the EGRV'S from the TDV6 only though, even with the claim that it improves performance.

It will generally make the engine better as you are not re-using dead air as it were.

Phone around and see if you can get the blanking plates, if you can stick them on instead as a less lessy job to do.

Cleaning them out will be a PITA and then you'll want to clean the stuff they plug into as that will no doubt be caked as well... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Is that the fairies that go in and clean them Wink

Maybe they have some kind of fresh air inlet to help clean them out but EGR's will always end up caking in orrible stuff unless they get a flush through of eolys type fluid... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

TD6 one no problem to clean out, they can get choked with carbon. Did mine before I decided to remove it. I have read reports of the ones on the Sport and Disco needing cleaning so should be a straightforward job but not done it so can't comment on whats involved. However it is probably easier to clean if you take them completley off. Mine was a blue one! Smile

TDV8, TDV6, SDV6 and TD4 (Puma) valves are all self cleaning, but still do get blocked... l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

on the cleaning angle, apart from actuall carbon build, up are EGRV'S liable to fail in any other way, dodgy electronics for example?

EGR blanking kits are very common Tdi and Td5 engines, although I'm not sure how the more complex engine management and diagnostic systems would cope with them. Si. <This is my name.

WYNNS EGR DIESEL CLEANER...

With engine fully warmed:

Open Air Filter Box and remove Air Filter

Start Car and run at idle

Spray can into Air Intake(s) at 1 second bursts max

Occasionally increase revs to 1500 rpm then let engine stabilizes back to idle before repeating

During spraying RPM will fluctuate with possible Diesel knocking

Continue 1 second bursts until Aerosol empty (may take a while)

Run at idle for 5 minutes

STOP Engine

Reconnect Filter/Parts

START ENGINE and drive 4-7 miles but DO NOT EXCEED 3000RPM

Allow engine to idle for at least 60 seconds before turning off.

This process will help clean the EGR's, Inlet Valves, MAF Sensor and whole Air Intake system.

Da Da Thumbs Up

Book time is 2 hours for both valves...

Though in reality, 4 seems to ring a bell, though that may have been an RRS Embarassed
