Christmas tree dash, clunk and misc annoyances!

Hello chaps,

I had both front struts go pop last week and they were replaced by my (brilliant) local indy as well as the tracking sorted...

However (aaaargh) ive now got a load of problems. In summary:

1) christmas tree lights after 10 minutes or so driving.

ABS, Traction control, (!), 'air suspension inactive' and 'HDC inactive' warnings, plus suspension 'locked' in whatever current setting with suspension lock light stuck on.

2) loud 'clunk' from the front end when cornering at low speeds.

Feels like is coming from middle of dash and deep down (but could be wrong).

So, a few questions...!

When the struts were changed could it have knocked out a sensor (abs, speed, suspension height monitor etc)?

Could the clunk be something not done up right after struts went on?

Things I've done so far:

Disconnected battery for half an hour.
Lock to lock reset
All fine
Put suspension in all settings - all fine
Left it in access mode
Had a cup of tea and a Marlboro
Started it up, now locked in access mode
Disconnected battery again
Didn't work this time
Did a lot of swearing
Did lock to lock a lot
Came here

My indy uses autologic if that makes any difference.

Sounds like the steering angle sensor needs re calibrating. HDC uses the ABS to work. If the car thinks its going left but wheel speeds say no a straight line they confuse the ECUs and go into fail safe mode. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Hmm, thanks chaps. I wonder if this is related:

When the first strut went the steering wheel went off by about 20 degrees. The secomg bag went bang the day before it was due into the indy but steering wheel still canted.

Today i took the steering wheel off to give it a good clean. When i put it back on i made it dead ahead. When i drove it the damned thing was 20 degrees off the other way!

Sounds likely that you had the wheel off centre and when the tracking was done they put the steering wheel straight ahead and then track the car. This will cause the steering angle sensor to be out. The default before causing problems is around 11 degrees but if you have moved the steering wheel by 20 degrees your steering angle sensor will be well out. What you will need to do now is find where the sensor is centred and then align the steering wheel to that position and then the tracking will have to be redone

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense!

Would you suggest I take the wheel off and put it back to where it was (as in wheels straight, wheel canted off right by around 20 degrees)? If so I'm pretty sure I can do that to within a few degrees as I made a template before I straightened the wheel today, after all the problems had begun.

You need to have the angle sensor set on a computer so that it is straight ahead, then straighten the steering wheel, then have 4 wheel tracking done Thumbs Up

Magic, will get that done pronto. I just hope that my indy's Autologic is man enough to interrogate and reset the angle sensor...

Update:

Yep, it was the steering angle sensor. Recalibrated and all is fine now. Thanks again chaps, would have been scratching my head over this I'm sure.

It's a common problem, usually after having tracking or suspension work done.

Glad you're sorted Thumbs Up

Just an(other) update on this as it came back!

It seems I have two problems:

1) Faulty ABS sensor. This is being replaced today.
2) I Censored up!

On point 2: After the first air strut burst my steering went off by about 20 degrees. I had both front struts replaced but the wheel was still off at an angle. So, being the gung-ho kind of chap I am I watched ther PowerfulUK video on how to remove the steering wheel, did just that, striaghtened it up and put it back on.

Very bad idea apparently!

My guy said that there was a specific place the wheel should be and doing what I did can lead to problems.

Sadly all of this only came to light as I was on top of a mountain in North Yorkshire! The suspension has been reset with Autologic that morning and went up easily to offroad height. It got me to the top of a hill and went pop! Luckily we managed to find a way back down that I could do using normal road height.

So hopefully today will see it fixed, especially as I am leading a group of 7 Land Rovers on the highest green lane in Yorkshire on Sunday morning!
