thats blollocks, I've got a few diesels and no they don't - the oil goes smokey coloured after a thousand miles or so and it takes about 5k to go really dark.

My friend has a sport and has had similar issues. He now runs a service and mot station and only found out they hadn't done the work they said when his head mechanic undertook its 3rd or 4th service. Original filters still in, fluids dubious etc etc. He now advises people not to use or buy a RR from someone who uses LR. Range Rover 4.4 V8 Autobiography

Just phoned up the LR dealer, they said they carried it out and that on a big diesel engine very quickly the oil will go black (?) also said that the power steering fluid needs to be checked when the car is warm (I did it 6hrs after) I had parked it up. They did not seem to offended though. Wondering whether I should take it to another LR dealer |

Im in the same opinion about Land Rover service history ! Its worth NOOOWT I bought my car at 56k and was told by the garage that it has just recently been serviced. Checked my oil and it was dark and runny if you know what I mean. The viscosity is more like water than oil. Seen enough dirty water from doing me own oil changes on the TD5 and TDI and racebikes. I decided to do a service on the RR and to my surprise the air filter was nearly black so I guess I was right. When I spoke to the garage they said it had been done. I asked why the service counter had not been reset and I was told that they had problem with their machine. My machine reset it alright my bloody finger !! |

Thanks for the replies guys - they are insisting that the engine oil will go black on a big diesel engines. Regarding the power steering fluid I checked the manual and it said do the check when the engine is cold contrary to what the garage said. Anyway going tommorrow morning to a different LR garage to atleast get a power steering top up - hope they can just do it first thing in the morning |

I'd call the dealership back, say you don't believe them, and offer to give them a chance to do the job properly before you report them to trading standards! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining! |

Thank for the replies guys just thought I'd update you. Went to a different official* LR and they said its normal for the oil to go black. Regarding the power steering fluid I bought some from there and topped it up and so far it seems fine, so they defo did not top that up. |

Which "Main Filter" is £50!!?? Including all parts for a full comprehensive fluid service I would expect to pay no more than £150-£200 - then plus a couple of hours labour (non-franchised around £40) £300 absolute max. However - instead of second guessing. Ring your nearest main dealer and then ring your nearest indy. |
