Thumbs Up @ daveo

Got some real life issues to deal with tomorrow, but might get some time to figure it out.

Plugged the video output into my RSE and they both worked together showing the carx screen very nicely, but went wonky when I connected the front screen output as well. Maybe when I sort out my wiring all three will be happy together ?

Looks like I may have to do some iBus code snooping too, rotating the right hand knob worked, but pushing it didn't (this is when I had carx up on the RSE) .

OK, success (sort of) Smile

Now have carx up on front screen, no sound, rotary right knob occasionally works, pressing it doesn't.

Seems we add the codes into the Carx.ini file as the default ones are hard coded? .

Seem to have most of the teething troubles sorted now, just need to sort out the button codes to get better control, and now my intended PC has arrived I can set that up and put it in place. Now to figure out how to run digital TV..... Smile .

I'm only using a lowly Acer Aspire One with 160gb HDD. This is fine for a car pc, low power, small footprint, all in one, screen attached, has battery power

At home I run as my main PC (and also for my HTPC) the Asus E1012p nettop - which has the Nvidia ION and a faster dual core atom, you can get a 12v adapter for these as well - fine for media playback and general desktop use, not so good for serious number crunching / encoding. Was tempted to use one of them in the car...maybe later.

Have now found a guy who did linux/xbmc on an E39 and wrote his own iBus interface - waiting to hear back from him. .

Having just seemingly blown up the radio and sound on the car tonight, ( http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic9091.html )I repaired indoors to test out my reverse camera and usb video capture dongle thingy.

The USB thingy needed a driver which I had to track down on the interweb as the supplied CD didn't work!

http://www.sabrent.com/drivers/USB-AVCPTSetup_For_Win7.zip

The camera needed 12v supply, so I rigged up a 9v and 2 x 1.5v batteries (to make 12v), plugged camera into USB thingy, usb thingy into Car PC, started up carx and fiddled with the cam settings and there we have it, reverse cam, complete with distance scale. Doesn't work in the dark though.

Alternatively I can use the left over AV input on the white module, and then switch the TV over to AV on reversing, unless I can figure out how to "make it happen".

The camera has a second power wire for the replacement number plate light bulb, a nice little LED, may have to give some thought to where this gets wired in - to prevent a fault code based on what i have heard from others who have fitted LEDs in there? .

Not a happy new year...... :(

Found some time to review the iBus codes coming from the head unit, and checked these off against the list that comes with carx, and put them in the carx.ini file.

No real improvement from the button presses:

Mode/Tape does it job well - this brings up the carx screen.
Right Knob Press will either work 1st time, after two or three presses, or not at all
Left Turn and Right Turn will either work 1st time, after two or three turns, or not at all

Also the button pressing seems to got to work on other menu settings behind the scenes, I managed to change my temperature from C to F whilst working in the carx screen?

Steering Wheel buttons work well

Had had trouble with sound not working but this time around worked every time I needed it.

So after a good fiddle with buttons I can get music and videos to play, but getting back to the main menu is the same fiddle, so not practical for on the move. And I made it crash on the front screen, although was able to use the mouse on the PC

Front screen is very dim compared to rear screens

Running navcoder or IBA Analyser also allow the front screen to display the PC screen, if I could find a way to consistently capture the iBus codes and convert these to keystrokes/mouse clicks I could run XBMC as a front end?

With next to no information out there about the inner workings of carx, nor about how to maintain the screen output to the front screen without carx running, I have now reached a bit of a dead end.

Off to join mp3car / carpc etc see if I can get any help there..... .

Been there, done that Smile

Made some progress this morning. Much prefer working in linux than windows and made contact with the car using Art Tevs OpenBM-Gateway software. For those interested, here is his site and carpc project! http://projects.tevs.eu/OpenBM. The work he has done is quite impressive, using XBMC to run the whole OBC as well as CarPC.

Once I had figures out the COM assignments (tty in linux speak) I was getting all the ibus codes coming down the screen Smile

Should just be a matter of assigning keypress events to these codes which relate to button presses to run xbmc as the front end. (easier said than done)

Will detail all this in the front end of the thread, once I have it all sorted out.

Front screen very dim though - nice and bright with OBC but dim with PC (may be better if I disconnect the rear screens?)

So a slightly happier new year after all .

Been making really good progress of late, having switched to a Linux setup and with help from Art Tevs of the OpenBM project. Tonight I ran the hardware and software together and was able to operate XBMC from the OBC buttons.

More work to do on button control, seems that the right hand knob and the 1-6 buttons may be enough, and I have got to try to get that screen a bit brighter and clearer!

Art will do a replacement screen unit (with upgraded screen and his own hardware) for @ 300 euros, which completely takes over from the OBC but retains all the functions - runs the radio, CD and OBC bits and bobs. You have to supply your own screen unit for this - they are @ £190 on eBay. It's a tempting upgrade....for the 02-05 units.

Happy days Smile .

Not yet, as its a pig of a job to dismantle most of the upper tailgate to fit and then run the cabling back to the PC:)
There is nothing in RAVE about removing the black outside bit that holds the number plate lamps (held in by four torx bolts?) but I guess this will become clearer once I take all the inner trims off. I am hoping there will be enough room to squeeze a phono socket through the rubber boot between tailgate and roof - shame to have to cut and then re-solder.

Am also wishing I hadn't ripped out all the cabling for the wireless transmitter which would have been fine for the power and video for the camera.

Have sized it against the existing "glass" though, and it is the same size. Need a dry day and have a bit more tweaking to do on the system before I go ahead and fit. .
