FLAT BATTERY RR

hi, can anybody help me out. my battery keeps going flat on 05 range rover, i've had it tested and its ok. tried disconnecting sat nav & play station- still goes flat . Pulled fuse for radio -still goes flat. I've read on forum's about a relay that can be fitted under centre consul but my local specialist says this is only for earlier RR. I'm at the end of mt teather with this and sick of getting jump leads out. Any ideas ??? please.

To check for leakage buy yourself one of these

http://www.maplin.co.uk/automotive-current-tester-217879

and then check every fuse on the car for current when the car is shut down.
If you don't find any current leakage on a fused circuit you then need to check for leakage by disconnecting the battery earth, connecting an ammeter to the earth lead and the other side of the ammeter to the car body earth point. Can be done with a multimeter with a current read facility.
If all this proves -ve, could possibly be a failing alternator diode allowing battery drain thro the alternator. This will eventually show a a red non charge light on the dash.
The chances are your battery simply isn't being charged sufficiently to keep up with demand and is permanently in a low state of charge.
To overcome this and charge the battery fully buy yourself a CTECK MSX 7.0 battery charger and your problems may disappear forever.

How old is the battery?

Does it go flat overnight, or in a few hours?

Does it go flat on its own? (Disconnect overnight to test)

Does it only go flat when at home or at other locations too? (could be some wireless activity keeping the car "awake")

Any other mods with electrics to the car apart from PS1/2 ? .

thanks for the quick replies, first of all i've done a check with amp meter & removed each fuse to see if there is a drain but found nothing. Not sure how old battery is, battery goes flat overnight but sometimes can go flat when parked up after travelling 20 miles, all locations . Never tried disconnecting battery overnight yet but will try it this weekend. many thanks

Really sounds like duff battery, and given it has gone flat several times it won't be in peak condition any more. But worth checking out the alternator before stumping up the (@) £110 for a new battery.

Lots of threads on the forum about where to get new battery from Smile .

Had the same with mine as soon as it became colder last year. I had the battery replaced by an LR specialist who were very surprised to see the car had it's original battery ('05 car).

For me - new battery - problem solved.

Hope yours is as easy . . . .

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

its sounds like your battery has a floating cell, theres nothing on the car that can drain a good battery in 20mins.

had similar. Check what alternator is producing on and off load but my advice would be to change the battery (100Amp min) - LR put a warranty battery in a week after ownership and it never was very good - flat battery every two months or so. Paid for a Bosch one from Costco - she has not missed a beat since. Lock the car overnight too - shuts every module down properly - consider also a battery conditioner - Lidl do a good one every now and then for not much!

I reckon it's a dud battery too. However it could be a faulty alternator.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. (admittedly a different car - old style Disco). Battery flat one morning so charged it up and drove around for couple of days with no problem. Then dead battery again in morning. This repeated a few more times. I assumed the alternator was ok as it charged when being driven. So bought a new battery, which ran flat after a few days!

When I walked past my car one night I heard a faint whistle from under the bonnet. Investigation led me to find it was coming from the alternator. Seems like an internal fault was causing it to drain the battery when parked up. A new alternator sorted out the problem. Both batteries were fine after that, I kept one in the boot as a spare for emergency.

The problem seems to have been caused when I jet washed the engine bay. I think water got forced into the internal wiring of the alternator and doing some damage. Lesson to be learnt there. Sad No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

1. What was the drain amp draw when you tested it?
2. Check alternator is charging correctly (13.5v - 14.5v) electrics on. Ie heater, lights, stereo ect and rev to 2000rpm. Range rover td6 54 reg touch screen
