I think that as drivers of land rover products we can all agree we have traction nailed no matter how icy/snowy it gets (within reason). The real benefit of winter tyres is the different compound which retains greater flexibility in lower temperatures allowing the tyre to work better. The increased grip and improved braking performance are scientifically proven. I have friends and colleagues in Europe where the use of winter tyres is mandatory and their BMW's & Mercedes have no issues with getting going, steering and stopping in the heights of their winters.

There is nothing wrong with rear wheel drive cars in the snow, you just need the right technique and preferably winter tyres to aid grip. Last year I was relegated to the wife's little BMW whilst she took my RRS. I didn't have any problems Thumbs Up (or winter tyres Big Cry )

That said my FFRR is sitting one set of 19"s with new Pirelli scorpion mud and snow rated tyres as they look to have a better tread pattern and more sipes in the blocks than the part worn cr Censored py Nexen tyres that came with the 20 inch wheels the car originally arrived on

Winters are a no brainer for me as I have 22" Overfinch Tigers on for summer. Saying that for my first outing on snow I was on the 22's (with brand new tyres) and had no issues, unlike my neighbour in his X5!

I just hope availability of tyres once winter really sets in is better as I only have 4 and would be in trouble if I get a puncture (spare is a summer tyre).

Cheers
Rory

Whoa, Bow down nice system, any tips on how to hang them up like that? Apart from making sure the roof is strong of course!

Loop some rope around is all you need to do to hang them

I prefer to stack mine in the corner - well they are in the shed now so I guess hanging isn't really an option for me any more

I have an enormous garage, but I didn't want it cluttered up with tyres. I have two cars, and two sets of tyres to store.

My architect said the roof can take 400kg per m2 - there's a terrace above, so I knew it was plenty strong enough. I stacked them 2 at a time so there's head room, not because of the weight.

I got some metal stuff that seemed appropriate from the diy place. Block of wood with a hole in it. Rope through the hole and tied to a large bolt to hold it. Thread the rope through the centre of the wheels, over the metal in the roof and tie to tow bar of FFRR, drive forward till tyres are on the ceiling then clip on with hook I failed to mention earlier.

It is stupid and comical, but works.

ATR's ???

... I have Iota's on my ffrr which have been good in the dry but I am considering an ATR for all year rounds use. Do any of you have experience of either scorpion ATR or General Grabbers? Or for that matter any ATR tyres for the fullfat which are terrible on the tarmac?
Cheers

A couple of weeks ago I put a set of Continental Winter Contacts on the missus ML. They were only £15 a corner dearer than the Pirelli Scorpions so I thought I would give them a go. Will see how the tyres perform if and when we get some of the white stuff and report back.

Put new Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtremes onto my FFRR today, that's both cars with them now.

The D3 was superb last winter wearing these tyres (on 17" rims). Very sure footed (but never forget the laws of physics still apply...) Graham

Vredestein Wintrac 4 Xtremes on mine 3 weeks ago , you watch the first winter for 3 years with no snow this year lol. They were brill last year and in 2009. Scorpions ok but do not stop anywhere near as well or wash out on corners. Far to many gone...

Yes, I bought an open sports car, a new motorcycle and installed a watering system in my garden.

Result, crap summer.

...just bought new winter tyres for the sports car, maybe no skiing now. Big Cry

I got (I think) a great deal on a set of 4 x 20" Vred Wintracs from the Bay, so the plan is to put them onto my 20" wheels and put the 22's in the shed until spring/summer. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey
