20" Tyres and prices

Lots of thread at the moment about tyres for 20" alloys and here's what I have found out:

My local tyre place always beats everyone's prices hands down, so I know their prices are good.

Here's the prices they gave me for the following brands, price includes fitting, balancing and VAT

Michelin + Continental £229 each (£916 for 4)
Pirelli £215 each (£860 for 4)
Goodyear £199 each (796 for 4)
Dunlop £179 each (£716 for 4)

When you compare the prices for 4 tyres, it seems a no brainer to buy the package on eBay from Matford Land Rover who are selling the 20" OE Alloys plus tyres (michelins) all for £800 inc Delivery.

Then, sell your old alloys on Ebay and make back a few hundred quid, the cost comes right down.

I know what I will be doing when my tyres need replacing. Discovery 4 HSE

also looked at this, and the figures are very good if your vehicle is a pre 06, if not you also have to factor in the cost of removing tyres off two sets of rims, reinstalling tyres and then the balancing on top, plus listing fees etc.

My experience with tyre dealers is they will sting you to carry out the above service, many are reluctant to do it and who can blame them, they would far rather sell you the tyres in the first place.

Adam

You're right about buying a package from Matford, but read their descriptions carefully, as some of their packages say they and for pre 06 or not suitable for diesels

Well spotted VMPP.

What difference does it actually make though if the tyre is V rated instead of Y rated?

V rating is up to 149mph - I can't see me ever getting up to more than 120 in a TDV8 without bottling it! They are hardly going to be unsafe are they? Discovery 4 HSE

I contacted Rimmer Bros in Lincs as they sell the same package of wheels and tyres, they say that the 20" alloys with 109V rated tyres are suitable for all FFRR models except the Supercharged.

That sounds like sense to me. Only the Supercharged can realistically get up to V rating speeds. I'm not sure I'd want my TDV8 to do 150mph! Discovery 4 HSE

Maybe it's the weight, not just the speed....Don't know...

If it were just for speed, V rating would be sufficient. The TDV8 cuts at around 130's, which is V territory.

My car, when the time came to change them, I though about it, but ended up fitting the Y's (Pirellis)

The RRS, even the diesel, uses Y's. The advantage is that their mesurements are more easily found in the market (It's the same as the Cayenne's 275/.../20).

It's your car, but as you know the TDV8 goes like ''a fast car'', It's pretty performant for its weight, meaning you should stick with the better tyres. Just my opinion....

Ref the pre 06MY and post 06MY stuff around 20" wheels - I got to the bottom of this.

Basically any wheel for the L322 will fit on any MY but the wheel nuts are different pre and post MY06.

The pre MY06 wheels use black wheel nuts which have a flat washer on them and have a slightly smaller diameter than the post MY06 nuts.

Post MY06 nuts are silver/chrome and I believe have a slightly angled washer on them, plus they have a bigger diameter than pre MY06.

The diameters I'm talking about arn't stud diameters (they are both the same thread size) but the diameter of the shaft on the nut which goes into the wheel then onto the stud.

So - moral of the story is....

If you want to fit pre MY06 wheels on a post MY06 car, just make sure you buy matching wheel nuts + locking wheel nuts.

If you want to fit post MY06 wheels on a pre MY06 car, again, just make sure you get the right wheel bolts.

I know this as I've got a MY06 car and have got the matford wheels (albeit from Rimmer Bros, who sell two different packages of the same wheels - pre MY06 which is just 4 wheels and post MY06 which is 4 wheels, 16 nuts, 4 locking nuts and 1 locking adaptor).

Will.

You will also find that the std 7 spoke wheels for post 07 have dimples in them around the centre.

But, if you have a post 06MY car such as an 07 or 08, then you can still buy those wheel packages and just use your existing wheel nuts? yes?

Whether they have dimples on is another cosmetic difference, not a fitting difference. Discovery 4 HSE

no, if you are fitting Matford or Rimmer pre 06 MY wheels to a post 06 MY vehicle then you need to change the nuts as well.

Right, Gotcha.

Thanks for clearing the mist.

I might look for some newer 20" alloys instead such as the newer twin spokes. (Like Mick has/had) Discovery 4 HSE

Mick, the top ones, they look better in the flesh too I reckon.

I'm not keen on those shiny ones at all. Laughing Guess I should see what tread depth I have on the new car when it arrives. I noticed it has an odd tyre though, A Cooper.....oh dear. Discovery 4 HSE
