ignition Live in the front?

Hi All,

Despite the update to a MK 4 sat nav and latest disc, the routing on it is awful - not a patch on TomTom - so decided to use my TomTom after all.

It appears that the cigar lighter socket is constantly live (left tomtom plugged in over night to see if it cut off when the car went to sleep and it didn't) - plus I hate trailing wires - so want to find an accessory live or iginition live in the front easily accessible to wire the tomtom adaptor into.

Anyone know of any easily accessible wires that fit the bill, and wont cause odd errors if handling the extra couple of watts the tomtom draws?

Cheers

Simon

have you tried the ciggy socket on the back of the center console, not sure if its ignition or permanent live and routeing the power cable will be very easy along the console.. ... - .- -.

I wouldn't have thought it too difficult to make the cigarette lighter ignitioned controlled by unplugging the cable serving it from its fuse and connecting it back into an ignition controlled fuse.
Failing that you could put a relay in the cigarette socket cable and switch the relay from an ignition source.
Either should be straight forward, the wiring is fed from the bootspace fuse board, good access.
Going to do this myself as a permanently on socket is a pain when using accessories from it.

Do you have the power socket inside the centre cubby? I use that for my phone, iPad, tomtom etc. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Won't it just be easier to unplug the tomtom when you park up? No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Have you adjusted all the route settings on the mk4 Nav? Seems to me like its all set up wrong! I had mk4 Nav in my last TD6 and a Tom Tom in my other car and they were as good as each other IMO... Try changing some settings on it before you look to rewire your car to run the Tom Tom...

Having looked at the wiring diagram for the car since my last post I find that there are actually two wiring options for the cigarette lighters.
One for live all the time and one for ignition controlled thro a relay.
Although the cars appear to be wired using option 1 it's possible that the wiring is also in place for option 2 and may only involve minimal work and possibly the purchase of a relay.

Cheers for that - I'll have a look at Rave and a poke around over the weekend.

Exactly - but it's more than that - I hate fly-leads and wires running across the dashboard etc. So I'd like to find and ignition live and then hide all the wires so they pop-out of the dash top just behind where the tomtom sits.

Someone else mentioned that the routing can be improved by messing with the settings of the DVD satnav - mine seems to have two options only - fastest (where it picks fast roads like motorways) or Shortest - where it will wander down country lanes for miles to save 4 inches on the journey. What I want is 'Quickest' where it balances distance against speed - like the tomtom. My route to work is the quickest and is 59 miles - Mk4 for fastest wants me to do 72 miles and starts off going a long way the wrong way to join the M6 - Shortest is better but takes forever. Tomtom takes me in a straight line nearly along the A5/A14 cutting through one little village to join A14 - perfect and by far the quickest route.

If anyone knows how to make the MK4 that intelligent I'd be all ears! I've got the latest firmware on it - from some site - it's the V32 version I think with a Range Rover splash screen added.
