Alan, if it is taking so long to back up it sounds like your phone is sending data to apple. Due to the servers being very busy this slows down the process. Search google for turning off sending data to apple and your backups will be much much faster.

My understanding of it is that with the iPad you can send message / pictures to someone else who has a wifi connection and not a contract sim in their iPad

agh ok i read it was using icloud servers to send direct message to message - device to device when a wifi signal is being used on Iphone , Ipad or Itouch

Once you have enabled iMessage then you go to messages and press on new message then on the + button you add the contact by number or email and if that contact has iMessage too the name will turn from green to blue and viola! you're using iMessage |
