Plumbers

Hi Guys
I've just bought a new house which is in need of modernising. The house needs a new central heating system as the one that's there is very old! There is a back boiler so you can tell just how old. I've had a plumber out for a job but not sure if he's taking the Censored or not. Was looking for a foreigner to keep the cost down as we need to make the money stretch. So I'm here really to find out what it should cost ball park. It's a large 3 bed semi needing a new combi boiler, with 7 good size rads and copper pipe work. If anyone has experience or can help I would be very grateful of any advice etc. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

My dad has just re-done my folks house from vented heating to central and plumbed the whole lot in, mounted the boiler then got a plumber round to tap into the gas line(he had already laid the copper pipe to each end..) and saved a good £1k by doing this.

If you can solder then plumbing isnt that hard just follow instructions and get a good blow torch and a decent amount of tinfoil to stop other things near the pipes burning and see if you can get some pipe bending kit off a mate and buy a blow torch for the joints, some flux and solder, though i believe you can now get solder with flux already in it Smile

PS does your 3 bed semi have a chimney and are you any good with an axe/chainsaw? if so there is a great way to cut your fuel bills if you can plan ahead at all Very Happy

A decent sized older style house with 7 radiators would require a reasonable sized combi boiler. From my experience the boiler complete with flue is likely to cost in the order of £2000-2500 just to buy never mind install.
If you want a decent hot water supply from a combi buy a size which provides adequate hot water otherwise it will take about a week to fill a bath. This means the heat output of the boiler is oversized for the heating requirements of the house but believe me it's worth it.

The cost can vary by huge amounts depending on what boiler is fitted.

A Worcester plus 7 rads non exposed pipework around 3-3.5k

How many bathrooms?

No matter what system you use you still want to use copper for the main feeds then either split off smaller bore to the rads, or use a spplitter type device to knock it down a few sizes.

Plastic can be easier but as someone who has it installed in a new build house, after a few hundred heat cycles the joints seem very flakey....

Yes I only meant for the smaller 10 / 5 mm pipe. Mines been in for 4 odd years now and is OK.

But remember when you start dropping from 15mm down to 10mm and smaller the joints are still taking the same pressure .

Cheers for the help guys. Already from your comments its clear there is a big difference in price. Got quoted £4.5-£5k which i thought was a bit steep. The boiler he mentioned was a valiant and think he said a 28jigawatt or whatever there rated in. There is only one bathroom. I would be happy to do the work myself and get it certified but think the other half would have other ideas. What would be the scrap value for my old system? Obviously they guys would factor this into there quote but could be a way of getting some money back.

Also i have another guy coming round tomorrow to quote me happy but wont be going in the FFRR as i think this could be a cost multiplyer! we will see. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Try and go for a Worcester Greenstar Highflow 440CDi @ 29.2kW or 550 CDi @ 30.6kW.
Better boilers than Valiant stuff. Smile
