I'd get it done by a gearbox specialist, it's not a particularly straightforward job, since the box is supposedly 'sealed for life' and they'll charge you not much more than you'll pay for parts, as you're discovering. It must be the correct oil, and it is very expensive!

Done incorrectly it will kill your gearbox, I'd save your spanners for other jobs and sub this one out! But that's just my two penn'orth! Thumbs Up

I disagree - it's an incredibly simple job - drain old oil; remove sump plate bolts & change filter; fill up again; run to correct temperature and check levels - the full details are on this site with photographs ...

Well we're all entitled to our opinion, however gearboxes are known to sometimes fail after an oil change, and it's not really straightforward (unless it's different on the TD6 box), since the gearbox is not designed to be serviceable (sealed for life). How do you check that you have the right oil level afterwards?

Looks easy enough really. I stand corrected, though I'd probably still get it done by a mechanic due to lack of ramp and tools! Thumbs Up
Personally for the sake of a little extra money I'd take it to a specialist who has all the appropriate tools, and does them every day, rather than assume that I'll do it spot on and not kill my gearbox! Thumbs Up

Fair enough - it's in the wiki ( http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1259.html ) so up to each person to decide a) whether it is simple to do and b) whether they feel that they should do it.

I'd do it for both the ZF and the GM (TD6) gearboxes. And for those who are not experienced auto DIYers, I'd have it done by a specialist. Not because it's difficult to do, but because the pan needs to be dropped and the debris on the pan magnets looked at to judge the condition of the box. A specialist will know what he's looking at.

There's quite a bit of info as to the whys on the forum already - 5th button from right on top bar for all spoonfeedees. Razz

I'd agree with most of the comments - mine cost me £152 from a specialist, the oil and parts would have cost me more than that. __________________
