Ok so an oil change for my gear box?

Looked into this today as my cars done a lot of miles so priced up some oil and sump filter and got the prices below:

Sump filter £75 + VAT

Oil 9 litres @ £23 + VAT per litre.....ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!

Seriously is this the price everyone is finding for this job or is the stealer trying to rip me?

I'd get it done by a gearbox specialist, it's not a particularly straightforward job, since the box is supposedly 'sealed for life' and they'll charge you not much more than you'll pay for parts, as you're discovering. It must be the correct oil, and it is very expensive!

Done incorrectly it will kill your gearbox, I'd save your spanners for other jobs and sub this one out! But that's just my two penn'orth! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Oh yes i agree!!!...i don't really do any DIY on my cars anyway....i was just shocked at the price of oil.

To be honest, i don't think ill bother, the gearbox is changing as smooth as a nut and im worried if i start tampering with it it will never be the same.

I disagree - it's an incredibly simple job - drain old oil; remove sump plate bolts & change filter; fill up again; run to correct temperature and check levels - the full details are on this site with photographs ...

Well we're all entitled to our opinion, however gearboxes are known to sometimes fail after an oil change, and it's not really straightforward (unless it's different on the TD6 box), since the gearbox is not designed to be serviceable (sealed for life). How do you check that you have the right oil level afterwards?

Personally for the sake of a little extra money I'd take it to a specialist who has all the appropriate tools, and does them every day, rather than assume that I'll do it spot on and not kill my gearbox! Thumbs Up Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Maybe I'm a member of the "head in the sand" brigade, but unless it's broke, I don't fix it! Whistle

If it says it's sealed for life, why mess with it? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

I am struggling with the same thought, having had issues with automatic gear boxes on two separate cars (granted both GM cars). of which one ended up being resolved relatively cheaply (flushing with diesel cleaned it up nicely and allowed me to use if for a few more years) and the second resulting in a new (reconditioned) gearbox.

I hear two stories, some people say that the lifetime sealed box NEEDS to be done because the oil does deteriorate and ends up with trouble. I am inclined to lean that way, also based on my previous experience. On the other hand ZF are not some small outfit that don't know what they are doing, nor would they jeopardize the reputation, especially since oil changes are not their cost (a new box would be profit but I don't think it makes business sense, especially since they are German).

So what about gathering first hand stories (I have heard to many second/third etc. hand stories that make no sense and when you get to the first hand story it was completely wrong) from FFRR owners that have had gearbox issues, oil changes or no oil changes.

So all FFRR owners, please reply Smile

I suggest to provide the following info :
- Age of car/model year
- mileage
- driving conditions (while in your possession)
- oil changed or not (and by whom)
- problems before or after oil change
- problems in general

So in my case :
- MY 2006, built May 2005
- 77,000 km (approx. 48,000 miles)
- mostly traffic, low speed, short distances, high (tropical) temperatures, before US import, assume longer distances (Texas).
- no oil change, planned for end 2011
- currently no major problems, only disengaging when breaking (at reaching standstill) gives minor "jolt". gear changes smooth. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Fair enough - it's in the wiki ( http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic1259.html ) so up to each person to decide a) whether it is simple to do and b) whether they feel that they should do it.

At the back of my mind, I think ZF DO recommend an oil change, it is Land Rover who do not.
